Ephrata Review,
Puppy Mills will continue their
abusive legacy as long as people continue purchasing their animals. As the
saying goes: "You are either part of the problem or part of the
solution."
I chose to become part of the solution when I
adopted a beautiful black lab mix whose previous owners had him chained in
a yard, neglected and unloved. Neighbors took the responsibility of feeding
him and eventually persuaded the owner to release him to Canine Rescue of
Central Pa.
This organization was started five years ago by 12
people who also wanted to become part of the solution. It takes a
tremendous amount of time, effort and sacrifice. Private kennels have to be
found to house the animals until adoption. Contacting veterinarians who are
willing to reduce their charges to provide emergency care takes time to
negotiate. And then there are the scores of volunteers who donate food,
give long walks, lots of love and open their homes to provide foster
care.
Two hundred dogs have passed through this organization as the
lucky recipients of all this time and love. But there are so many more that
won't get this chance, particularly the animals in the puppy mills that
will never see the light of day as they are forced to breed over and over
again as an easy revenue base for the owners.
One Cinderella story
involved a black lab found tied to an abandon refrigerator providing the
only shelter for the animal. "Lance" was malnourished and very
sick when rescued by law enforcement but thanks to Canine Rescue, now lives
with a young couple who value their new companion like one of the
family.
Increasing numbers of dogs are being abandoned, abused and
neglected and Canine Rescue continues to provide services including rescues
from humane leagues that have limited space and have no choice but to
euthanize these animals. But with these increased numbers comes increased
costs so we are looking to the public to continue their
support.
Information can be found at www.caninerescueofcentralpa.org
as to how you as an individual can participate in becoming the solution or
join us at the Lititz Springs Park on May 17 at 7 a.m. for our flea market
fund-raiser.
So when you are ready to take a dog into your heart and
home, visit a rescue or a humane league. Do not continue the support of
puppy mills. Become the solution.
