Arlene Ressler, Brownstown, ECH gift shop volunteer

Arlene M. Ressler, 81, of Brownstown, passed away Sunday, May 6, 2012 at Pleasant View Retirement Community.

She was born in Lebanon County to the late Noah and Eva (Heisey) Huber and was the former wife of the late Russell Ressler.

Arlene was a life-long member of Ebenezer Evangelical Congregational Church, Brownstown. Arlene was very proud of her children and grandchildren and devoted her life to them. She also loved gardening, flowers, swimming, shopping for bargains and playing cards. Arlene was a volunteer in the gift shop for the Ephrata Community Hospital (ECH). She had a teaching degree from Millersville State Teaching College.

Arlene is survived by three sons: Russell Jr., husband of Cathy Ressler, of Brownstown; James, husband of Vicki Ressler, of Lancaster; David, husband of Beth Ressler, of East Petersburg; two daughters: Marjorie, wife of Galen Erb, of Brownstown; Joy, wife of John McClay, of Fairhope, Ala.; 12 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and two brothers: Rich, husband of Nancy Huber, of York; and Noah Tom, husband of Kathi Huber, of East Petersburg.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by a brother: Bob Huber.

Bessie Mishler, seamstress, active in her church

Bessie R. Mishler, 91, of Lititz, went to be with the Lord Monday, April 30, 2012 at the Pleasant View Retirement Community, Manheim.

Born in Durlach, she was the daughter of the late Isaac and Mabel Reider Steinmetz. She was married to the late John F. Mishler who died in 1999.

Bessie worked as a seamstress at various garment factories. She was a member of the Brunnerville United Methodist Church, where she was a Bible school teacher, church treasurer, Sunday School secretary and choir member. Bessie was also a member of the Leisure Hours Club, Brickerville, and she enjoyed embroidery and was an avid hand quilter.

Surviving are three daughters: F. Lorraine Boyer, of Lititz; Anna Mary Patterson, of Lititz; Delores Mertz, of Elizabethtown; nine grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.

Bessie was preceded in death by a daughter: Joyce Clemens; a grandson: Tim Boyer; three brothers; and two sisters.

The family wishes to thank the staff at Pleasant View for the loving care given to their mother.

Bessie’s life celebration service was held at Brunnerville United Methodist Church, Lititz, on May 4 with Rev. Steven W. Rodgers officiating. Interment took place in Brunnerville United Methodist Cemetery.

Rachel Hursh, 54, born in Ephrata

Rachel W. (Burkholder) Hursh, 54 years old, of Middleburg, died Friday, May 4, 2012 at her home.

She was born on July 13, 1957 in Ephrata, a daughter of the late Titus and Elizabeth (Weaver) Burkholder. She was the wife of Earl Ray Hursh, of Middleburg, for 34 years.

She was a member of Shade Mountain Mennonite Church, Mt. Pleasant Mills.

She is survived by eight children — four sons: Duane Husband of Helen (Miller) Hursh, of Middleburg; and Randall, Ryan and Jeremy, all at home; and four daughters: Virginia, Melissa, Rachelle and Janita, all at home; a grandson: Derrick Hursh; 13 brothers and sisters: Ida, wife of Paul Brubacker, of Ripley, Maine; Laverne, wife of Harry Erb, of Scurry, Texas; Eby, husband of Ruth (Hostetter) Burkholder, of Lititz; Vera, wife of Ira Hege Jr. of Hagerstown, Md.; James Burkholder, husband of Rachel (Hostetter), of Tamaqua; Mary, wife of Clarence Wenger, of Manheim; Sara, wife of Roy Zimmerman, of New Holland; Jesse, husband of Mary Ellen (Martin) Burkholder, of Spring Mills; Esther, wife of James Sensenig, of Arcola, Ill.; David, husband of Tracy (McCool) Burkholder, of Mifflinburg; Rhoda, wife of Dale Martin, of Scipio Center, N.Y.; Miriam, wife of Marlin Nolt, of Myerstown; and John, husband of Anne (Burkholder) Burkholder, of Colby, Wisc.

Anna Horning, 75, was factory, domestic worker

Anna B. Horning, 75, of Ephrata, passed away Wednesday, May 2, 2012. She was under the care of Hospice of Lancaster County.

Born in Upper Leacock Township, she was the daughter of the late Franklin M. and Barbara L. (Oberholtzer) Horning.

A member of the Springville Mennonite Church, Weaverland Conference, Anna worked in local factories and as a domestic worker over the years prior to her retirement.

She is survived by three sisters: Lavina and Florence Horning, of Ephrata; and Ruth, wife of Paul M. Martin, of Liberty, Ky.; and two brothers: Reuben, husband of Sarah Ann (Sauder) Horning, of Akron; Franklin Jr., husband of Esther (Horning) Horning, of Myerstown; numerous nieces and nephews; great nieces and nephews; great-great nieces and nephews; and a sister-in-law: Edna, wife of Lyman Sensenig, of Stevens.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by four siblings: Lena Hoover, Clayton Horning, Leah and Ina Horning.

Funeral services were held on May 7 at the Martindale Mennonite Fellowship Center, Ephrata, with further services at the Groffdale Mennonite Church (Weaverland Conference) with Bishops Melvin H. Martin and Lester B. Martin and Ministers Walter Zimmerman and Wilmer Martin officiating. Interment took place in the adjoining church cemetery.

Robert Herr, 83, AT&T, Bell employee, cubmaster

Robert W. Herr, 83, formerly of Ephrata, died Wednesday, April 18, 2012, at Moravian Manor.

He was the husband of Janet E. Grossglass Herr for 64 years. Born in Harrisburg, he was the son of the late Benjamin Franklin and Ruby Alyce Carr Herr.

A 1947 graduate of Manheim Township High School, Bob worked as an engineer for Bell Telephone in Lancaster and Harrisburg and finished his career with AT&T in Morristown, N.J.

Bob was a member of Salem Lutheran Church in Lititz, where he served on the church council. He was treasurer of Luther Acres resident council, and he loved golf, music, the St. Louis Cardinals and spending time with his family. Bob coached little league baseball and served as Cub Scout cubmaster when his sons were involved.

In addition to his wife Janet, Bob is survived by four children: Eric B., husband of Rebecca M. Herr, of Bristol, N.H.; Nancy S., wife of John W. Casey, of Ephrata; Nathan S., husband of Stephanie Herr, of Glen Ridge, N.J.; and Brian R., husband of Danielle Herr, of Carlisle, Mass.; 12 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Gladys Grube, 84, EHS grad, Worley and Obetz secretary

Gladys V. (Wolf) Grube, 84, of Lititz, formerly of Ephrata, passed away Wednesday, May 2, 2012 at Moravian Manor, Lititz.

She was born in Ephrata to the late Leroy and B. Arvilla (Shiffer) Wolf and was the wife of the late Robert L. Grube, who passed away in 1998.

Gladys was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Ephrata. She enjoyed sports, especially the Philadelphia Flyers, golf, word puzzles and spending time with her grandchildren. During her working years, Gladys was a secretary for Worley & Obetz Oil Company of Manheim, for over 30 years. She was a graduate of The Ephrata High School Class of 1945 and the Lancaster Business School.

Gladys is survived by two sons: Gary L., husband of Debra (Hirneisen) Grube, of Ephrata; Jeffrey L., husband of Alyssa (Deibler) Grube, of Akron; a daughter: Linda J., wife of Thomas A. Bender, of Akron; six grandchildren: David and Scott Bender, Janelle and Ryan Grube and Hannah and Owen Grube; one great-grandchild: Rilee Bender; and a sister: Helen Bowman, of Ephrata.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by a brother: Robert L. Wolf; and sisters: Betty Callihan and her twin sister: Clara Rudy.

James Dull, 74, well-known baseball coach, Dart retiree

James L. Dull, 74, of Rothsville, passed away Monday, April 30, 2012 at Hospice of Lancaster County.

He was born in Lancaster County to the late James and Irene Weit and was the husband of the late L. Darlene (Zwally) Dull, who died July 25, 2005.

A 1955 graduate of the Ephrata High School, he worked at Dart Container, Leola, until his retirement. He was an avid baseball player and coach. James enjoyed bowling, fishing, hunting and golf. He was a member of the Ephrata Lodge B.P.O. Elks #1933 since 2007.

James is survived by three sons: James B., husband of Donna (Boyer) Dull, of Ephrata; Jeffrey S., husband of Marci (Hoover) Dull, of Akron; and John M. Dull, companion of Kim Nauman, of Akron; his fiancee: Rosie Klugston; and two grandchildren: Marcy Dull and Austin Nauman.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his grandson: Derrick Dull; brother: Jerry Dull; and sisters: Betty Brumbach and Erla Ober.

His memorial service was held on May 7 at the Stradling Funeral Home, Akron, with Pastor Tom Weber officiating.

Ella Mae Carpenter, 95, was active in church, community

Ella Mae Carpenter, 95, of Lititz, formerly of Lincoln, passed away Tuesday, May 1, 2012 at Luther Acres.

She was the wife of the late Roy R. "Punky" Carpenter, who died in 1988.

She was an active member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, Ephrata. Ella Mae worked as a cafeteria worker for Moyer’s. She was a volunteer at Luther Acres for many years and Meals on Wheels. She was a part of the Golden Years Club at the Ephrata Rec Center. Ella Mae was full of life and always had a smile on her face.

Ella Mae is survived by two sons: Ronald R., husband of Carol Carpenter, of North Caroline; and Randall R., husband of Carol Carpenter, of Ephrata; grandchildren: Candace Boyer, Christy Carpenter, Katy Carpenter, David Carpenter, Douglas Carpenter and Matthew Carpenter; 12 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her brothers: Harvey and John Horst and sisters: Dorothy Bensinger, Pauline Horst and Esther Orwig.

Funeral services were held on May 7 at the Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, Ephrata, with Rev. Henry E. Herbener Jr. officiating. Interment took place in the Memory Gardens Memorial Cemetery.

Calvin Good, 87, WWII vet, Allen G. Musser worker

Calvin B. Good, 87, of New Holland, formerly of Bowmansville, died Friday, May 4, 2012 at Garden Spot Village.

Born in East Earl, he was the son of the late Harvey H. and Susie (Burkhart) Good.

Calvin graduated from Terre Hill High School and then served in the Army Air Corps during World War II in England, France and Trinidad. He was employed for many years at the former Allen G. Musser Appliance Store, retiring in 1995. He enjoyed bowling and playing cards.

Surviving are eight siblings: Harvey B. Good, of Mohnton; Elizabeth, wife of Harvey Mensinger, of Avon Park, Fla.; Gertrude, wife of C. Marlin Hess, of Lititz; Andrew, husband of Clara Good, of Reamstown; Sarah, wife of Gordon Landis, of East Petersburg; Willis, husband of Ellen Good, of Stevens; James B. Good, of Mohnton; and Charles, husband of Linda Good, of Reading.

He was preceded in death by a sister: Gladys Horst; and three brothers: Marvin B., David B. and Walter B. Good.

A private service will be held at Groff-High Funeral Home with interment in Memory Gardens. Kindly omit flowers.

Tina Burkholder, 46, East Earl

Tina Marie (Schulze) Burkholder, daughter of the late Earl L. and Pauline Elizabeth (Jacobs) Schulze, was born in Lancaster on March 1, 1966. She passed away Tuesday, April 10, 2012 in East Earl at the age of 46 years and 40 days.

Tina is survived by her companion: Ronald Gordon Horst; her children: Matthew Paul Burkholder, of Ephrata; Andrew Gordon Horst and Steven Earl Horst, of East Earl; and Samantha Nicole Horst, of Holtwood; her grandmother: Pauline Wessner, of Ephrata Manor; her brother: Earl L., husband of Denise (Summers) Schulze, of New Holland; sister: Susan, wife of Richard Brill, of New Holland; as well as several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, Tina was preceded in death by her husband: Keith Allen Burkholder on December 5, 1987: and her sister: Pauline E. Zwally.

A memorial service was held on May 5 at Grace Church, Ephrata. Presiding pastor was Kim Gregory Robertson.
