Herman L. Wiest, 81, vet, worked for ARCO, Sunoco
Herman L. Wiest, 81, of Stevens, passed away Saturday, March 9, at Hospice & Community Care, Lancaster after an extended battle with Leukemia.
He was born in Hegins to the late Allen and Annie (Schmeltz) Wiest and was the dedicated husband of Dorothy (Lohr) Wiest, with whom he shared 60 years of marriage.
In addition to his wife, Herman is survived by three sons: Richard, husband of Karen Wiest of Lancaster; Kerry, husband of Kim Wiest of Ephrata; Scott, husband of Sharon Wiest of St. Mary’s; 14 grandchildren: Kelley Hadlow, Danielle Artus, Andrea Weidman, Derrick Wiest, Alex Wiest, Samuel Wiest, Courtney Thacker, Scott Wiest Jr., Emily Wiest, Megan Wiest, Ben Wiest, Madison Wiest, Lydia Wiest and Morgan Wiest; four great-grandchildren; two brothers: John Wiest of Tar City; and Eugene Wiest of Gratz; and two sisters: Shirley, wife of Paul Schrope of Harrisburg; and Connie Bagley of Salem, Ore.
He was preceded in death by a brother: Elwood Wiest and sister: Arlene Freeman.
He served in the U.S. Army (1954-1956). During his working years, he spent 17 years as a Merchant Marine for Atlantic Richfield Co. He later worked on shore for ARCO and Sunoco in the Oil Refining industry before retiring in 1996.
Herman enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, landscaping, gardening and playing cards with his friends.
A viewing was held March 12 at the Roseboro Stradling Funeral Home, Denver. An additional viewing was held on March 13 at the funeral home followed by funeral services with Rev. Scott Wiest Sr. officiating.
Interment will be private at the convenience of the family at Indiantown Gap National Cemetery with full Military Honors.
