Daub appointed to Denver Council

Denver Council members questioned two prospective council members at their Feb. 11 meeting.

Matt Stover and Blake Daub each previously indicated interest in serving on Denver Council. During questioning, Stover indicated he’d consider a run for a four-year term and Daub indicated he’d probably go for a two-year term.

"Well," said Councilman Rodney Redcay. "If we put Blake in the vacant seat (of Nathan Grubb) and he ran successfully for a two-year term, we’d have him for at least three years. Then Matt would not need to serve for such a long time if he runs for a four-year term."

"I know each of these men personally," Mayor Adam Webber said. "And each of them would be a good addition to our council."

Redcay’s motion to place Daub in the vacant seat until Jan. 6, 2014 passed unanimously.

Daub is vice-president of operations for Luthercare, which serves seniors and has childcare programs.

Eidemiller lone Mount to advance Injured Dumas makes tough decision

The Section III Wrestling Tournament was a bittersweet one for Ephrata.

Prior to the tournament ever getting started, the Mounts learned that L-L League champion and 100-win senior Todd Dumas was forced to pull out of the tourney with a degenerative wrist condition, which officially put an end to his season.

On the bright side, fellow senior Riley Eidemiller, who was injured the last two post-seasons, went on to place second at 126 pounds to punch his ticket into the District Three Championships.

Unfortunately, Eidemiller was the lone Ephrata wrestler to advance to Districts, which get underway Friday, 3:15 p.m. at Hersheypark Arena.

Other hopefuls, Ethan Sipe (145) and Cameron Eisenhauer (195), both came up short of advancing to Districts while Joey Sarmento (113) was forced to default because of an injury.

Mounts win one for Joan Ephrata rallies after shocking death of teammates’ mother

Trevor Seibel stood with the puck inside in the blue line, surrounded by a maelstrom of emotions few ever experience.

The Mountaineers had lost a two goal lead to the Annville-Cleona Dutchmen and were now tied 4-4 in overtime. The game was the second in the double elimination CPIHL playoffs held at Klick Lewis Arena. Ephrata lost its first game, as had Annville, so both teams needed the next goal to advance.

Along with the shrill emotions of a hockey game, Seibel, his brother and teammate Alex and their father Tracy faced the rawer and deeper emotions over the death of Joan Seibel early Monday morning. Most everyone in the Ephrata crowd probably hoped for Trevor to win the game in a Brett Favre-like fashion by shooting the puck; instead, he passed to Steven Zuziak on the wing. Zuziak then put a rising shot into the net to give Ephrata a 5-4 victory.

No Eagles move on from Mifflin

Cocalico entered the 2012-13 season as a team that was short on numbers and experience. And while the Eagles took their share of lumps this season, the experience they gained should pay dividends in the coming years.

The Eagles closed out the season this past Saturday at the Section IV Tournament held at Governor Mifflin Intermediate School.

While a few wrestlers got close, no one finished in the top three of their respective weight classes and thus did not advance to this weekend’s District Three Meet in Hershey.

Following the tournament, Cocalico Coach Matt Fittery said he hopes the disappointement of the early exits by his wrestlers fuels the fire for the off-season.

"Obviously it is a big disappointment not getting anyone through to Districts," he said. "We are just going to have to use that disappointment as motivation to work harder for next year. We had a few guys that were right there, but just didn’t quite get the job done. Hopefully, that makes them even hungrier for it next year."

CHS girls give L-S a battle

In a do-or-die situation, teams always talk about leaving everything they have out on the floor.

Cocalico found itself in that situation Tuesday night at Lampeter-Strasburg in the opening round of the District Three AAAA playoffs against the Pioneers.

In a rematch of a first round L-L League playoff game last Tuesday won by L-S, 53-42, Cocalico was determined make the Pioneers earn it this time with their seasons on the line.

And the Lady Eagles did, and then some. Sparked by the play of junior forward Marissa Gingrich, who scored a game-high 28 points (one off her season-high of 29 set back on Dec. 21 in a win over E-town), Cocalico nearly pulled off the upset.

But the seventh-seeded Pioneers, who lost to Lancaster Catholic in the L-L title game this past Saturday, had enough left in the end to outlast the Lady Eagles and advance in a 55-49 thriller.

L-S (23-2) hit a pair of threes in the final three minutes to hold off the Lady Eagles (18-7) and help them advance to Friday’s quarterfinals where they’ll face second-seeded Wilson (21-2), which moved on with a 43-33 win over Harrisburg Tuesday.

Hershey gets defensive in 53-27 win over Lady Mounts

By: TODD RUTH Review Sports Editor truth.eph@lnpnews.com, Staff Writer

The 2012-13 girls basketball season at Ephrata will go down as one of the top 10 in its long history.

Unfortunately, a year in which they overcame the loss of three key players to injury on their way to winning the Section Two title, has come to a close.

Tuesday night in the first round of District Three play at Hershey, the Lady Mounts succumbed to a suffocating Hershey defense that produced 21 turnovers, and an effective inside-outside game by the Trojans that

In the end, Division One guard Victoria Blackburn (Scared Heart) and 5-11 center Libby Nolan both scored 17 points apiece to lead Hershey to an impressive 53-27 victory in a battle between the eighth and ninth seeded teams in AAAA.

With the win, Hershey (20-3) now advances to Friday’s quarterfinal match-up at Carlisle, where the Trojans will face top-seeded Dover, a winner over governor Mifflin in Tuesday’s first round.

As for Ephrata, the Lady Mounts close out the season at 18-7.
