Daub appointed to Denver Council
Denver Council members questioned two prospective council members at their Feb. 11 meeting.
Matt Stover and Blake Daub each previously indicated interest in serving on Denver Council. During questioning, Stover indicated he’d consider a run for a four-year term and Daub indicated he’d probably go for a two-year term.
"Well," said Councilman Rodney Redcay. "If we put Blake in the vacant seat (of Nathan Grubb) and he ran successfully for a two-year term, we’d have him for at least three years. Then Matt would not need to serve for such a long time if he runs for a four-year term."
"I know each of these men personally," Mayor Adam Webber said. "And each of them would be a good addition to our council."
Redcay’s motion to place Daub in the vacant seat until Jan. 6, 2014 passed unanimously.
Daub is vice-president of operations for Luthercare, which serves seniors and has childcare programs.
Mike Hession, Denver Borough manager, updated council on the "tremendous job George Whetsel director of public works, has done to re-program the entire Autocon system and to replace a damaged power supply board for the system."
"The manual operation of the system," said Hession. "Requires a public works employee to return to the borough during the evening and nighttime hours to monitor well levels, reservoir levels, chlorine levels and overall operation."
"We’ve accrued a lot of overtime," Hession concluded. "The new system, on which we are awaiting a cost quotation, operates via radio rather than leased telephone line." Not using leased phone lines will save $6,000 per year in telephone costs. A cost quote is anticipated for the Feb. 25 meeting.
"This system was installed in 1989. We knew it needed replaced and we’ve been putting money aside for the last three years, intending to replace it this year," Hession said. "We just didn’t think it would go out so early in the year."
Denver residents were reminded that they may take stray cats found in the borough to the Lancaster County SPCA at no charge. Denver Council joined the county SPCA program last month.
In other business, a progress report on the replacement of the Scout cabin that was flooded out was given. FEMA monies and donations to date are short of the amount needed to start cabin construction.
Councilman Mike Gensemer was elected president pro tem.
Council adopted a resolution which requires dog owners whose dogs are lost and require service through the Denver dog law to pay the costs for such service.
Council authorized the Cocalico High School track team’s 5K run/walk on April 27.
