New principal named at Akron Elementary School
By: GARY P. KLINGER Review Correspondent, Staff Writer
A familiar face has become the interim principal at the Akron Elementary School.
Mrs. Sheri Horner has been appointed to fill the position vacated by the recently retired Dr. Enrica Gerhart. Because the position is being filled mid-year and because this is Mrs. Horner’s first experience as principal, the position will be considered interim for the remainder of the 2012-2013 school year. At the conclusion of the year, Mrs. Horner will be given the opportunity to be named principal outright.
"I am honored to be named the new interim principal of Akron Elementary School," said Horner. "I am so excited to be a part of the Akron All-Star family. The community and teaching staff are extremely dedicated to helping children achieve and grow."
Mrs. Horner joined the Ephrata Area School District staff in August, 1995 as a second grade teacher at Lincoln Elementary School. She also taught at Clay Elementary School, having most recently served as the district’s elementary math and science coach.

In less than two weeks, the popular micro-brewery Saint Boniface, currently located in the former "Artworks" complex on 100 N. State street, Ephrata, will move to a new location, complete with a bar.
By that time, Feb. 2, tastings and growler fills can be had at their new place, situated between the Elite Coach and Fulton Bank buildings at 1701 West Main in Ephrata. Pints, however, will not be served until about June, due to zoning and licensing processes. Even though the new brewery is less than two weeks away from opening, owner and brewmaster Jonathon Northup made time to talk about the venture.

Pioneer and ladies auxiliary part ways
By: ANDY FASNACHT Review Editor afasnacht.eph@lnpnews.com, Staff Writer

Warwick High School seniors Chris Sandkuhler (far left) and Bethany Han (far right), shown here with Warwick Athletic Director John Kosydar (center) were named winners of the 2012 Dr. Joseph W. Grosh Scholarship Awards, which were presented Monday night.
For the time being, it appears a 55-year relationship between the Ephrata Pioneer Fire Company its Ladies Auxiliary has ended.
First reported through a letter received this week by The Ephrata Review, as of Jan. 1, the mutual agreement between the two organizations, which began with the auxiliary charter in 1958, has reached an endpoint. Both current auxiliary president Nadine Carpenter and Pioneer president Jim Kiefer confirmed the basic information Monday, however the reasons it occurred and details weren’t completely clear.
It appears, however, the beginning of the end started with a meeting between the two groups last year, when the Pioneers asked if all related "branches" of the company (the auxiliary and the fire police) could come under one umbrella (the relief organization is another arm, but must stand alone).
"I don’t recall the reason why," Carpenter said when asked why the Pioneers made the suggestion, though she believes some of it had to do with grant requests.

Wrestlers gear up for L-Ls
By: TODD RUTH Review Sports Editor truth.eph@lnpnews.com, Staff Writer
This weekend could go down as one of the more special ones in the life of Ephrata senior wrestler Todd Dumas.
Not only is Dumas seeking his third-straight medal at the Lancaster-Lebanon League Tournament, which will be held Friday (4 p.m.) and Saturday (10 a.m.) at Conestoga Valley, but he could become the seventh wrestler in the Mounts’ storied history to reach the 100-career win plateau.
Dumas (22-3 on the season), who was a runner-up as a junior at 120 pounds and placed sixth during his sophomore year, is sitting on 95 now and could have 96 by the time Friday rolls around.
And while the competition should be fierce as usual (brackets won’t be released until Thursday), Ephrata Coach Josh Clair believes his senior is up for the challenge.
"Todd definitely has what it takes," Clair said Tuesday. "He just recently dropped to 120 and will be big for his weight, which is a definite advantage. Having been on the doorstep, he is ready to take the next step. He also has a great chance to hit his 100th career win this weekend. He is focused on the task at hand and has a great mindset. That is the first challenge, being in the right spot mentally for success."

Mounts lose tight games to Solanco, Warwick
By: TODD RUTH Review Sports Editor truth.eph@lnpnews.com, Staff Writer
Ephrata entered Tuesday’s game at Solanco, looking to right the ship after suffering three-straight tight losses.
In fact, all of the Mounts’ last six games were decided by nine points or less, and yet they were just 2-4 heading into Tuesday.
Well, they played another tight game, but after the dust settled, this latest one only added to the frustration as the last-place Mules escaped with a 44-42 win over Ephrata.
This one was tight throughout but Solanco, leading by one after three quarters of play, outscored the Mounts 12-11 in the final eight minutes to grab the victory.
Evan Radcliffe led the Mounts (3-9 section, 4-12 overall) with a game-high 13 points while Nathan Zimmerman chipped in with 11. Damon Kreider scored 11 points to lead the Mules (2-10, 3-14).
This past Friday before a packed house in Ephrata, visiting Warwick took the game to overtime with a late clutch three-pointer, then put it away at the foul line to earn a huge 54-50 crossover win.
