Akron begins development of new park
By: JAMES MCGINNIS Review Correspondent, Staff Writer
Akron Borough Manager Dan Guers announced at the Oct. 8 council meeting that excavation work has recently begun at Colonial Park and that the planting of trees and installation of picnic tables and playground equipment should be completed by the end of the month if the weather cooperates.
"We had hoped to be further along by now, but the rainy weather has slowed our work," he said. "We’re going to play it by ear."
The park, which is located off Colonial Drive, is being developed in conjunction with the section of the Warwick-Ephrata Rail Trail that will be constructed from Main Street to the south end of Ephrata. The trail will form the northern boundary of Colonial Park, and a connector path will be constructed to ensure access from Colonial Drive.
The Warwick-Ephrata Rail Trail is envisioned to extend from Parkview Heights Road in Ephrata west along the abandoned Reading-Columbia Railroad through Akron and Ephrata and Warwick townships to the latter municipality’s campus off Clay Road, connecting the Ephrata Linear Park and Lititz-Warwick Trailway. Each municipality is responsible for developing its own section of the trail.
