Mary Drake, 83, Ephrata, registered nurse, singer
Mary F. Drake, 83, of Ephrata, entered into her eternal rest Tuesday, Sept. 4, 2012.
She was born in Richmond, Va., the daughter of the late Harvey and Inez Anderson Foster.
Mary earned an RN certificate in 1950 from Riverside School of Nursing in Hampton, Va., and a school nurse teaching certificate from the University of New York in Albany, N.Y., in 1969. She began her career as a charge nurse at Eastern State Hospital in Williamsburg, Va., where she met her husband of 21 years, Robert S. Drake, New York. After moving to upstate New York, she worked as a registered nurse and as a school nurse teacher for 25 years. She finished her career as a night supervisor on the Adolescent Unit at Peninsula Psychiatric Hospital in Hampton, Va., before her retirement. Mary was a person of faith who is now at peace with the Lord. She was a strong, fun-loving lady who held her head high and found humor in everyday experiences. She absolutely loved her childhood home Buckroe Beach, Va. Her many talents included a beautiful singing voice, piano playing, painting, sewing, gardening and collecting antiques. Her strength, sense of humor and sweet singing voice stayed with her throughout her life.
She will lovingly be remembered by her five children: Robert S. Jr., husband of Dawn Drake, of Florida; John F., husband of Maria Drake, of Michigan; Rebecca I., wife of Brett J. Gilbert, of Ephrata; David L., husband of Katherine Morse, of Drake, Calif.; and Daniel M. Drake, of New York; 11 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and a brother: Gene Foster, of Virginia.
She was preceded in death by three siblings: Auburn Foster, Lil Donaldson and Virginia "Punkin" Saunders.
Services will be held at the convenience of her family. If desired, memorial contributions may be sent to Alonna Gautsche Spranger, Director of Gift Planning Services, at Landis Homes, 1001 E. Oregon Road, Lititz, PA 17543 or landishomes.org with contributions to specifically go to Eden East.
Fred F. Groff Inc., Lancaster, has been entrusted with the arrangements.
