EHS girls lax job to Schneider?

According to reports, Ephrata is set to name Manheim Township graduate Kirstin Schneider as its next girls lacrosse coach.

Her appointment is pending school board approval.

Schneider, who lives in Lititz, comes to Ephrata after guiding the Cumberland Valley girls to a 17-2 record a year ago. If approved, she’ll replace Tara Walls.

Mighty Mountaineer 5K to raise funds to benefit District Students

The Ephrata Area Education Foundation will host the Mighty Mountaineer 5K Run/Walk on Saturday, September 22, beginning at 9 a.m. at the Ephrata Intermediate/Middle School.

The grass course with gently rolling hills is great for casual runners and walkers as well as the fiercely competitive. Those who register by Friday, August 31 are guaranteed a T-shirt.

Proceeds from the event will help the Foundation continue to provide financial support to the District for many projects that benefit students, such as Venture Grants, "Learning is Fun" kits for District 3- and 4-year-olds, and alternative education.

Registration brochures are available on the Foundation website at ephrataeducation.org or can be picked up at any District buildings.

"Participating in this 5K event is a great way for District families and community members to support special projects funded by the Ephrata Area Education Foundation. All proceeds will benefit District students who participate in the many innovative educational initiatives supported by the Foundation," said Dr. Brian Troop, Assistant Superintendent and a member of the 5K planning committee.

"The planning committee is hoping this will be the first of many 5Ks that are successful fundraisers for the Foundation," added Tam Fasnacht, a Foundation Board member and member of the 5K planning committee.

Cocalico soccer teams venture to Ireland

By: KAITLAN MITCHELL Review Correspondent, Staff Writer

Heading into the 2012 fall season the Cocalico boys and girls high school soccer teams have an unique edge over their competition– a stamp. Not the type used for letters and packages, but rather the kind of stamp found in passports after high caliber competition in Ireland.

From July 28 through August 6, boys’ coach Bob Dungan and girls’ coach Dan Hogan accompanied 30 athletes on an immersive athletic experience across the pond. The boys and girls squads each played three games. Their competitors were Peamount United Football Club, Adare Football Club and Muervo Football Club.

"It was cool to see them support each other throughout the week," Cocalico girls’ soccer coach Dan Hogan says. "Even though they’re a close bunch, they became even closer."

The Lady Eagles left the matches with a record of 2-1. The Peamount United Football Club, winners of the U17 Ireland National Title, was the only team able to defeat Cocalico with a score of 4-2.

After playing three relentless club teams, the Cocalico boys team left Ireland with one tie and two losses. Both losses were by only one, critical goal. Throughout the competition days the Cocalico athletes kept energy and support high.

Golfers kick off fall with pair of matches

The Lancaster-Lebanon Golf League kicked off the fall season this past week with a pair of matches.

Ephrata made its Section One debut and performed solidly over the first two matches. Cocalico, meanwhile, looked like a team that will be in the hunt for a Section Two title this season.

Tuesday afternoon at Foxchase, Cocalico hosted the section and finished 4-2 on the day in a tightly contested match that saw Solanco finish with a team score of 316 to edge Garden Spot (317) and the Eagles (319).

Manheim Central was a distant fourth with 338 strokes, followed by Elizabethtown (347), Lampeter-Strasburg (363) and Lebanon (507).

The big story of the day was the play of Garden Spot’s Aaron Fricke, who broke a school record with a nine-under-par score of 63.

Individually for the Eagles, Nate Artz and Nate Sauder finished one-two on the day with scores of 75 and 76, respectively. Hans Shollenberger (82) and Ethan Miller (86) rounded out the Cocalico lineup.

After two matches, Cocalico and Solanco are tied atop the section with identical 10-2 team records.

Ephrata, meanwhile, earned its second-straight fifth-place finish Tuesday in a Section One match hosted by Warwick at Overlook.
