First day for him too

While thousands of Ephrata students returned to class Monday for the opening of school, fifth graders weren't the only ones ready to take on a new experience at Ephrata Intermediate School. Popular longtime Ephrata Middle School math teacher Eric Martin (shown here with some EIS students) began his first day as the new assistant principal of the building, joining principal Gangi Cucciuffo, who will now oversee both the EIS and EMS. Bonfire planned for ‘Meet the Mounts’ event Thursday at War

The public is invited to attend a special Meet The Mounts Night on Thursday, Aug. 30, at War Memorial Field starting at 7 p.m.

The evening will begin at 7 p.m. with the EHS marching band and cheerleaders entering the field. The band will performs fight song while the cheerleaders will dance in the middle of the field. Eagle seniors give verbals to Division One schools

By: KAITLAN MITCHELL Review Correspondent, Staff Writer

After a brisk set of high knees to the 25-yard mark, the Cocalico field hockey team methodically gathers in the middle of the field.

Here, a few key words are extended from the senior class to create a current of electricity throughout the team before practice. Then, with all hands thrown into the huddle, their chant of "intensity" echoes across the field.

And for three Cocalico seniors, intensity has been a strong theme they have kept steady since their freshmen year. A motif Janelle High, Allie Stauffer and Carissa Witmer are sure to bring with them once they depart from high school and to the collegiate field.

Their extensive resume flows from winning section titles three years in-a-row to contributing to the Lady Eagles’ Pennsylvania State finals appearance in 2010. There is no doubt this senior class has a solid background to grow upon as they enter three different Division One university programs.

Eagles eye opener

Ephrata runners hope to hit their strides during upcoming season

The Ephrata cross country team is shown during it's summer camp, which was run by the Ephrata coaches in Sullivan County.

The Ephrata Cross Country team is looking forward to a successful season this fall.

As most kids started their summer vacations in June, the distance runners in Ephrata made a commitment to work hard in preparation for the upcoming school year.

In July, 26 members of the team attended a cross country camp, which was run by the Ephrata coaches in Sullivan County. Through 10 weeks over the summer break, the team logged 4,912 miles running. To avoid the heat, the team would frequently meet at 7 a.m. over the summer to run together.

In 2011, the Ephrata boys cross country team finished 13-8, and the Mounts lost their two top runners to graduation. Because of all of their off-season running, the boys are looking to match their mark from last year.

They will be led by Sam Wolde, who grew up in Ethiopia, but moved to the USA three years ago. Other runners on the boys team who are looking to score points for Ephrata this year are seniors Eric Trella and Ibsen Powers, junior Tyler Gallagher, sophomore Tom Shoff and freshman Nate Becker.

Lady Eagles open net season with three wins

The Cocalico girls tennis team got out of the gates quickly this past week, earning victories in their first three matches.

Monday afternoon vs. Conestoga Valley, Cocalico swept all four singles matches to key an eventual 6-1 team victory.

Alli Witmer, Natalie Sukanick, Courtney Murphy and Ali Stafford all earned wins in singles play for the Lady Eagles. Stafford and Murphy teamed for another win at number two doubles, and the final victory of the day for Cocalico was secured by the doubles team of Jill Eiding and Caitlin Cooper at number three.

Last Friday at home, the Lady Eagles got four straight-set victories in singles to propel them to a 6-1 non-league victory over Governor Mifflin.

Witmer, Sukanick, Murphy and Stafford all posted singles wins. Stafford and Murphy teamed for one doubles win at two, while Emily Lagaza and Cooper claimed victory at three.

Cocalico opened the season last Wednesday on the road in Lititz where the Lady Eagles won two out of three in doubles action to capture a 4-3 decision.

Witmer and Sukanick both were singles winners for Cocalico. That twosome teamed for a win in the number one doubles, and Murphy and Cooper then clinched the team win with a victory at number three doubles.
