Lady Eagles open net season with three wins
The Cocalico girls tennis team got out of the gates quickly this past week, earning victories in their first three matches.
Monday afternoon vs. Conestoga Valley, Cocalico swept all four singles matches to key an eventual 6-1 team victory.
Alli Witmer, Natalie Sukanick, Courtney Murphy and Ali Stafford all earned wins in singles play for the Lady Eagles. Stafford and Murphy teamed for another win at number two doubles, and the final victory of the day for Cocalico was secured by the doubles team of Jill Eiding and Caitlin Cooper at number three.
Last Friday at home, the Lady Eagles got four straight-set victories in singles to propel them to a 6-1 non-league victory over Governor Mifflin.
Witmer, Sukanick, Murphy and Stafford all posted singles wins. Stafford and Murphy teamed for one doubles win at two, while Emily Lagaza and Cooper claimed victory at three.
Cocalico opened the season last Wednesday on the road in Lititz where the Lady Eagles won two out of three in doubles action to capture a 4-3 decision.
Witmer and Sukanick both were singles winners for Cocalico. That twosome teamed for a win in the number one doubles, and Murphy and Cooper then clinched the team win with a victory at number three doubles.
Cocalico was scheduled to face Columbia Tuesday afternoon but no score was reported by deadline.
The Lady Eagles return to action Friday at Lancaster Mennonite, beginning at 4 p.m.
Ephrata, meanwhile opened the season up Tuesday afternoon with a tough road match against Hempfield.
Despite some tight scores, the Black Knights took three out of four in singles play before clinching the team victory with wins in all three doubles matches.
The lone winner on the day for the Lady Mounts was Cassandra Enck at number two where she earned a 6-4, 6-2 victory.
At number one, Brittany Smith dropped a tight 7-5, 6-4 decision while a pair of doubles matches came down to two-game margins.
