Ephrata runners hope to hit their strides during upcoming season
The Ephrata Cross Country team is looking forward to a successful season this fall.
As most kids started their summer vacations in June, the distance runners in Ephrata made a commitment to work hard in preparation for the upcoming school year.
In July, 26 members of the team attended a cross country camp, which was run by the Ephrata coaches in Sullivan County. Through 10 weeks over the summer break, the team logged 4,912 miles running. To avoid the heat, the team would frequently meet at 7 a.m. over the summer to run together.
In 2011, the Ephrata boys cross country team finished 13-8, and the Mounts lost their two top runners to graduation. Because of all of their off-season running, the boys are looking to match their mark from last year.
They will be led by Sam Wolde, who grew up in Ethiopia, but moved to the USA three years ago. Other runners on the boys team who are looking to score points for Ephrata this year are seniors Eric Trella and Ibsen Powers, junior Tyler Gallagher, sophomore Tom Shoff and freshman Nate Becker.
The Ephrata girls’ team also finished 13-8 in 2011. In 2012, they will be competing with the best teams in the Lancaster Lebanon League. The team lost their top runner to graduation last year, however the remaining girls have worked extremely hard over the past year to become a very competitive team.
Returning runners who are looking to score points for Ephrata are juniors Sondra MacNeal and Vanessa Hurst, and sophomores Erica Voigt, Kelly Liebl, Madison Fox and Andrea Castillo. A few of the new runners who are training with the top runners are freshman Jordan Carvell, as well as sophomores Taylor Zvitkovitz and Kaitlin O’Hanlon.
The two home competitions for Ephrata cross country are on September 18 and October 2 behind the middle school.
Jr High will run at 4:15 p.m., the varsity boys race begins at 4:45 p.m., and varsity girls race at 5:15 p.m. The league championship is also run at Ephrata on October 16.
