Up and running Reamtown Days brings back weekend race
By: MICHELLE REIFF Review Staff mreiff.eph@lnpnews.com, Staff Writer
Running enthusiasts will be able to gear up for some exercise and reward themselves with food, games and entertainment in the same day — for a good cause.
All of this will happen in Reamstown Memorial Park Sept. 8 with the return of the Reamstown Days race after a five-year hiatus. The event was held from approximately 1979 to 2006, dwindling down and eventually stopping for several years. It comes back as a 5K and Fun Walk/Run instead of a five-miler as it was previously.
This time participants will be competing for charity. While proceeds from Reamstown Days, Sept. 7-8, go to the Reamstown Park Association, all the money raised from the race will go to Acts of Love, a community outreach summer lunch program for children organized by area churches.
"I heard that in a number of communities this year they cut that out," said Dona Reber, who joined the Reamstown Days Committee for the first time this year and also chose to co-chair the race. "I think that helping to feed hungry children has to be a really good feeling."

East Cocalico discusses water regulations
By: ALICE HUMMER Review Correspondent, Staff Writer
"Water is like gold," East Cocalico Township Supervisor Chair Doug Mackley said as land planning engineer Brent Lied commented on regulations concerning storm water discharges from municipal separate storm sewer systems at the supervisors’ Aug. 15 meeting.
The NPDES MS4 report, required of municipalities, deals with improved water quality as the water heads, ultimately, to the Chesapeake Bay, the fourth largest estuary in the world.
"Mark (Hiester, township manager) and I were at a kick-off meeting today (Aug. 17)," said Mackley. "The water that leaves here will be clean or cleaner than then when it arrived. There are fines if you don’t do what you’re to do in a timely manner."
After the meeting, zoning officer Tony Luongo said, "We not only have to state how and when we treat our storm water; we have to provide evidence. That’s why I go out and take pictures when we do work on storm drains and date all my photos."
Lied shared, "The pending Notice of Intent (NOI) Submission is subject to conditions. Some of these include how the township manages pollution prevention staff training, and public education. This latter item requires information in the township newsletter, plus two other methods of distribution."

First day smiles

Although the first day back to school means books and learning instead of swimming and playing, many Reamstown Elementary School students were excited to begin the new year on Monday. Above, a group of youngsters are warmly greeted by the teachers and staff upon their return; and to the right, best friends Haley Morrissey (left), first grade, and Riley Hackman, kindergarten, hug each other before going to their separate classrooms. Playground plans discussed in Akron
By: JAMES MCGINNIS Review Correspondent, Staff Writer
Plans to further develop the borough’s Colonial Park dominated discussion at the Aug. 13 Akron council meeting.
Situated on 2.3 acres of land off Colonial Drive in the northeast section of town, Colonial Park is still largely undeveloped. Borough officials planted three fast-growing maple trees on the parcel earlier this summer and intend to install playground equipment, picnic tables and benches by next summer.
Once this is accomplished, a paved, multi-use path will be constructed along the western side of the park that will connect Colonial Drive with the Warwick-Ephrata Rail Trail. The trail will eventually connect the southern end of Ephrata with the Warwick Township Municipal campus. Officials in Ephrata, Ephrata Township and Akron plan to build the section from the southern end of the Ephrata Linear Park to Fulton Street in Akron when PennDOT replaces the bridge on Route 272 with a concrete tunnel next year.
Colonial Park is one of three public parks in Akron. The others are Loyd Roland Memorial Park, situated on the east end of the borough, and a hockey court and playground off Broad Street.

The turtles are off! Unique benefit event set for this Sunday at Elks
By: CHELSEA SHANK Review Correspondent, Staff Writer

Turtles like these will be lined up and ready to race at the fundraiser for Parker Harley this Sunday at the Ephrata Elks.
Though the recent Olympics may have left you thinking you’ve seen every kind of race imaginable this summer, a Turtle Derby in Ephrata is about to prove you wrong.
That’s right, turtles will be racing this Sunday, Sept. 2 at the Ephrata Elks Lodge as part of the "Pound it Park" fundraising effort for Parker Harley, an Ephrata High School senior.
Anyone can sponsor a turtle for $10. The turtles will be placed in the center of a 16-foot circular platform and race to the outside circle. Whichever turtle crosses the outside line first, wins. Cash prizes will be awarded to the winners.
"It is crazy. They are faster than you might think," said Jack Harley, Parker’s father.
Parker, 17, was diagnosed with Primary Sclerosing Cholangitis (PSC) in March after he was taken to the emergency room for a totally unrelated accident. PSC is a rare disease that causes inflammation and scarring in the ducts that bring bile out of the liver and into the digestive tract.

Break-in

This was the scene at the Wine and Spirits store, located at 31 W. Main St., prior to its opening Tuesday. (Photo by Stan Hall)
The Ephrata Police Department reported that a citizen stopped at the police station Aug. 28 at approximately 9:40 a.m. to report the front door to the Wine and Spirits Store, located at 31 W. Main St., was smashed.
Upon arrival police found that the business was entered and several liquor items were taken. Police determined the business was burglarized sometime after closing at 7 p.m. Aug. 27 and the morning of Aug. 28.
Although the manager who answered the phone at the Wine and Spirits store was unable to comment on the incident, it was determined after visiting the premises that the store remains open. The door, which still maintains its frame, has been temporarily boarded by wood. There were no signs indicating altered hours or closures, however the store will not be open Labor Day, Sept. 3.
Police said the estimated value of damage to the door is approximately $250. An undetermined amount/value of liquor was taken.
Anyone with information regarding the burglary is asked to call police at 738-9200. More BREAK-IN, page A6

Galens of Ephrata announces closing
A long-standing Ephrata furniture and appliance retailer announced it will be closing due to retirement of its
owners.
As published in the Intelligencer Journal/Lancaster New Era, Galens of Ephrata, which has been in operation since 1949, will be closing this fall with the retirement of owners Mike and Edith Amico.
The store, located at 389 N. Reading Road, has begun a going-out-of-business/retirement sale expected to last through the end of October.
The Amicos said now is the time to get out of the business since their lease will expire at the end of November. They said they figured an attempt to sell would be difficult so it was ruled out.
The owners said the store’s business continued to do well, with customers coming from all corners of Lancaster County.
At 32,000-square feet, the store includes 20,000 square feet of retail space and has 25 employees. The Amicos said telling employees about the store’s closing was tough since many of them have worked there for a long time.
As their final sale is launched, the owners said they especially wanted to thank their many loyal customers.
