Anyone who has shopped at Weaver Markets in Adamstown has likely visited The Wagon, the familiar fixture outside the store which offers reasonable lunch options for visitors.
What patrons may not know is that this popular attraction offers more than just a bite to eat for hungry customers. The trailer, which has been offering support to local community groups in the form of donations for several years, has embarked on its latest endeavor — a scholarship for Cocalico High School students.
Mike Weaver, general manager, said the A. Earl Weaver Scholarship, named in honor of his father, who founded the store in 1962, will be offered beginning with the graduating class of 2013. It will be a one-year award offered each year to a deserving senior who plans to pursue a business related major at an institution of higher learning.

East Cocalico Township Supervisors asked authorized solicitor Tom Goodman to write an enforcement notice to Mike Glass, developer of Heatherwoods, located on Hill Road, Denver, at their July 5 meeting.
Two weeks ago, Glass told East Cocalico Township Manager Mark Hiester that the hole that opened up in the development’s road would be fixed. To date nothing has been done.
Numerous times over the last two years, residents have asked township supervisors for assistance to have Glass finish and topcoat the roads in this phase of the development so that they can be considered for dedication. For the last five years no school busses have entered the development because the roads are not dedicated.

Reamstown Pre-K Counts accepts applications
Cocalico School District is accepting applications for its PA Pre-K Counts preschool program for the 2012-13 school year. This state-funded initiative provides FREE quality preschool to eligible children residing in the Cocalico School District. PA Pre-K Counts is designed for children who are 4 years old as of Sept. 1, 2012 and are at risk of school failure because of income (300 percent of the federal poverty level or a family of four earning $69,150 or less).
The program will be held at Reamstown Elementary School for half days beginning on Aug. 27. A total of 30 children will be accepted into the preschool classroom. Bus transportation will be provided to those children living in the Reamstown attendance area.
Interested parents and guardians should apply now to have their child considered for enrollment for the 2012-13 school year. Applications are available at the Cocalico School District elementary schools, the central administration office and on the Cocalico School District website at cocalico.org. Questions can be directed to Ella Musser, assistant superintendent for curriculum, instruction and assessment, at 336-1403.

Ephrata mourns loss of Highland teacher
By: MICHELLE REIFF Review Staff mreiff.eph@lnpnews.com, Staff Writer
As Ephrata Area School District nears the halfway mark of summer break, the faculty, staff and students are saddened by the passing of one of their longtime teachers.
At 51, Julia Crowther, a Highland Elementary School teacher, midget football cheerleading coach, wife, mother and grandmother, passed away suddenly last Saturday.
"Her coworkers lost a good friend," said Kevin Deemer, Highland principal. "Students who had her recently … many people who are now adults … really there are thousands of people who are going to be affected."
Deemer described Crowther as a leader within the building and the district who will be missed by many, not only in the school system but in the community, where she was very involved.
"For me she was a model teacher," he said. "I loved visiting her room and seeing what she did with the kids."
Deemer said the district is planning to offer counseling for staff members, most likely Monday of next week.
Once school is back in session this fall, Deemer plans to spearhead the creation of a memory book to give to the family. He will announce details in The Ephrata Review so that the community can participate as well.

Sounding the alarm Development residents raise concern over siren system used here
By: GARY P. KLINGER Review Correspondent, Staff Writer
Noise generated by a local fire siren is raising the ire of some living in the Brickyard development.
Chondra Mast, representing a group of those residents appeared before Ephrata Borough Council Monday night to request something be done to either tone down the volume of the sirens or perhaps better deflect the loud blare away from the development. Mast also addressed what seems to be some inconsistency with how the sirens are being sounded.
Mast has appeared before council in the past and promised to return with data to back up claims that the sirens amount to a bit of a nuisance. According to data collected, 17 percent of the sirens sounded were completely unreported as to the reasons for the call. She said that many of the sirens were non-fire related incidents.
"One incident on March 13, when three cars collided in the Brickyard development there was no siren," said Mast. "It just seems inconsistent that some are non-recorded with a siren but others have no siren."
Data presented indicated that on several occasions the sirens went off five times in a single day.

Youth Band Camp celebrates 25 years
The 25th annual Ephrata Youth Band Camp was held from June 25 through 28 at Fulton Elementary School. The camp is designed for students who have just completed grades four, five and six. The program gives them more experience in ensemble playing and large group performance, and it provides a fun activity as well.
"Most music camps are designed for high school and middle school students," said Mr. James Kimmel, director of the elementary band program and supervisor of music in the Ephrata Area School District. "I felt there was a need for a unique experience for younger students. The goals need to be carefully tailored, but with good instruction, a lot can be attained. We always need to keep in mind these students are young kids."
The band practiced from 9 a.m. to noon, Monday through Thursday. The time was spent in large and small group rehearsals interspersed with various activities for the students. The goal of the camp was to perform an outdoor concert at Hershey Park June 28. After the performance, students, accompanied by parent chaperones, enjoyed the amusement park for several hours and were treated to a picnic later in the day.

State Police station closing Ephrata Boro officials react
State Sen. Mike Brubaker (R-36) was notified that the State Police Troop J Command Center will remain in Lancaster County, but the Ephrata station will be closed.
According to the Pennsylvania State Police, the Ephrata State Police Station will close effective August 17. After that date, all Lancaster County State Police incidents will be dispatched out of the Lancaster Headquarters Station, located at 2099 Lincoln Highway East.
Ephrata Borough Manager Bob Thompson said further information is expected to be shared within the coming weeks.
"We own the building, and we’re the landlord," said Thompson. "We have a lease with them through November of 2014. There are some termination clauses, and we need further details from the commonwealth before we can determine what that means to us."
To ensure safety is not compromised for the communities that rely on State Police coverage, troopers from the Ephrata Station will be moved to the Lancaster Station and will be positioned strategically throughout the region during their shifts.
"When they’re this close and readily available, it’s nice to have them," said Ephrata Mayor Ralph Mowen. "When they’re being dispatched out of Lancaster, they’re response time if we need them isn’t going to be nearly as good."
