Dr. William Mudryk, Akron chiropractor, church leader
Dr. William G. Mudryk, 64, of Akron, passed away suddenly Sunday, June 10, 2012 at Ephrata Community Hospital.
He was born in Philadelphia to the late John Stanley and Lorna (Goodhart) Mudryk and was the devoted, loving husband of Eileen (Arena) Mudryk, with whom he shared 42 years of marriage.
Bill is a member of the Worship Center of Lancaster. He held positions on the boards of the Worship Center, Teaching the Word Ministries and Gateway House of Prayer. Bill was a loving, kind, compassionate and very giving man. He had a strong Christian faith and loved to speak into the lives of people. Bill enjoyed woodworking, singing, sailing, flying radio control airplanes and vacationing at the beach. Bill was a chiropractor for over 35 years and currently practiced at Rothsville Chiropractic in Akron, where he served the surrounding community. He was very passionate about his work and helping others. Bill served as a past president of Chiropractic Fellowship of Pennsylvania and continued to serve on that board.
In addition to his wife, Bill is survived by a brother, John Mudryk, of N.C.

Stewart Kessler, veteran, Brown Trailers employee
Stewart W. Kessler, 84, of Denver, died Saturday, June 9, 2012 in Ephrata Community Hospital.
Born in Fritztown, Berks County, he was a son of the late Clayton W. and Minerva (Young) Kessler.
A Korean War army veteran, he was a life member of Reinholds VFW. Stewart worked for Brown Trailers, Shillington, and earlier for Teledyne, Mohnton.
He is survived by his companion of 37 years: Katie (Doster) Killian, of Denver; a sister: Anna Hornberger, of Fritztown; niece: Jeanette Law, of Fritztown; nephew: Kent Hornberger, of Wernersville; and his beagle: Spunky.
Funeral services were held on June 12 at from Good Funeral Home & Cremation Centre, Reamstown, with the Rev. Elmer B. Reinhold Jr. officiating. Entombment took place in Pleasant View Cemetery Mausoleum, Sinking Spring.

Emily Harshman, 90, bank teller, retired postal clerk
Emily S. Yarnall Harshman, 90, of East Petersburg, passed away peacefully Monday, June 4, 2012.
She was born in Lancaster to the late Elwood P. and Hattie S. (Bear) Sheetz and was the wife of the late Jed C. Harshman.
Emily was a graduate of the 1938 Upper Leacock High School, a member of Ebenezer Evangelical Congregational Church, Brownstown, where she was a former Sunday School treasurer for the church and a member of the West Earl Lioness Club and Young at Heart Seniors. She also attended Bethany Presbyterian Church. Emily enjoyed reading, playing cards, bingo and traveling. During her working years, she worked as a bank teller for Brownstown National Bank and American Bank for 24 years and was a retired postal clerk for the Brownstown Post Office.
Emily is survived by a son: Scott Yarnall, of Landisville; three step daughters: Susan, wife of Donald Piefer, of East Petersburg; Janet, wife of Jim McColgan, of Morgantown; Kay, wife of Darrell DiStefano, of Elkton, Md.; eight grandchildren: Jared, Nick, Brian, Michael, Kristy, Andy, Tad and Zach; eight great-grandchildren; and a former daughter in law: Joni Yarnall.

Rhea Eshelman, school library aide, homemaker
Rhea A. Eshelman, 90, of Ephrata, formerly of New Holland, died Saturday, June 9, 2012 at Ephrata Manor after a lengthy illness.
Born in Reading, she was the daughter of the late William R. and Susan J. (Mast) Keffer. Her husband, Arthur G. Eshelman, died Oct. 8, 2009.
Rhea was a homemaker most of her life but later retired from the Eastern Lancaster County Alternative School as a library aide.
She was a member of St. John’s Center United Church of Christ where she had been active in the woman’s guild and library. She enjoyed gardening, sewing and feeding the birds.
Surviving are two daughters: Kathy, married to Harvey Fawber of Lancaster, and Ilene, married to Terry Sangrey of Paradise; a son, Jed Eshelman of Ephrata; four grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and a sister: Betty, wife of Lloyd Dotterer, of Reading.
Preceding her in death are two brothers: Karl and Leon Keffer; and a sister: Catherine Kachel.
The family wishes to extend their great appreciation to the staff at Ephrata Manor and AseraCare Hospice for the loving care of their mother.

Gerard J. Engel Jr., 48, welder
Gerard "Rod" J. Engel Jr., 48, of East Earl, entered into rest Thursday, June 7, 2012.
Born in Elizabeth, N.J, he was the son of Mary Ann Donofri Engel, of Ephrata, and the late Gerard J. Engel Sr. He was the husband of Karen J. Engel.
He was a welder at Carriage Machine, Bird-in-Hand. He attended Cedar Lane Chapel, East Earl. He was loved and will be missed by many.
Besides his wife and mother, he is survived by six brothers and sisters: Perry, husband of Sara A. Engel, of Halifax; Kimberly J., wife of Greg Dumm, of Lititz; Jeanine M. Beachy, of Reinholds; Travis J., husband of Martha E. Engel, of Plain City, Ohio; Eric M., husband of Angel D. Engel, of Hopkinsville, Ky.; Matthew V. Engel, of Ephrata; and 25 nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father: Gerard J. Engel Sr.
The funeral was held on June 10 at Mine Road Amish-Mennonite Church, Paradise. Interment took place in the adjoining cemetery.

Joseph DeSimone, 63, past commander of Ephrata VFW
Joseph Michael DeSimone, 63, of Ephrata, passed away Sunday, June 3, 2012 at Hospice of Lancaster County in Mount Joy.
He was born in Brooklyn to the late Michael and Yolanda (Servedio) DeSimone and was the husband of Deborah (Metlzer) DeSimone, with whom he shared 10 years of marriage.
Joseph was a member of the Cocalico Post #3376 VFW, Ephrata, where he served as a past commander. He was a fan of the Yankees and Steelers.
In addition to his wife, Joseph is survived by two daughters: Tammi DeVito-DeSimone, of Scarsdale, N.Y.; and Joann DeSimone-Smith, of Stevens; a step-daughter: Corinne Levering, of Ephrata; two grandchildren: Austin Smith and Victoria Fiteni; and a step- grandson: Bryce Levering.
A gathering to celebrate Joe’s life will be held on June 23, beginning at noon at the Cocalico Post #3376 VFW, 141 S. State St., Ephrata. Private interment will be held in Indiantown Gap National Cemetery with full military honors accorded by Lebanon VFW Post #23.
Memorial contributions in Joseph’s memory may be made to Hospice of Lancaster County, P. O. Box 4125, Lancaster, PA 17604.

Emil Brugger, 82, painter, Korean War Army veteran
Emil L. Brugger, 82, of Ephrata, passed away Sunday, June 10, 2012 at Hospice of Lancaster County, Mount Joy.
He was born in Ephrata to the late Robert P. and Mary Elizabeth (Moyer) Brugger and was the husband of the late Anna (Hollinger) Brugger, who passed away in 2000.
Emil served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War and was a member of the Cocalico Post #3376 VFW, Ephrata. He enjoyed feeding the birds and animals, playing cards, tending to his house plants and watching old movies. During his working years, Emil worked as a painter for Abram Horst and William Murry.
Emil is survived by daughters: Mary J. Hainley, of Ephrata; Teresa A., wife of Ernest Eisenhauer, of Myerstown; a son: Jeffrey Scott, husband of Kim (Lausch) Brugger, of Denver; six grandchildren; eight great- grandchildren; and a half-sister: Shirley Consylman, of Ephrata.
In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter: Laura L. Roberts, in 2006.
His funeral service will be held on June 14 at 11 a.m. at the Roseboro Stradling Funeral Home, 533 Walnut St., Denver, with Pastor Joe Hyatt officiating. Interment will take place in the Pleasant View Cemetery.

Gala marks another year of dog rescue
Delaware Valley Golden Retriever Rescue (DVGRR) will hold its 11th annual Golden Gala on June 10 from 3 to 7 p.m. at Aronimink Golf Club in Newtown Square. The 2012 Gala will be a "Red Carpet" tribute to the donors and supporters who make the rescue of the dogs possible. It will feature fabulous silent and live auction items, raffles, entertainment and delicious gourmet fare.
Guests may bid on weeklong vacations in beach homes in Ocean City, N.J., or Bethany Beach, Del.; spend New Year’s Eve welcoming 2013 in a luxury condo in Sedona, Ariz.; or plan a ski vacation in Park City, Utah. Class of 2012 prepares to graduate Honored for excellence
Cocalico High School will turn the page to the future tonight. But during the past few weeks several events have already been held to honor the students. One of these was a baccalaureate service on Sunday in the high school auditiorium; the other, a senior awards ceremony on May 30.

Green Thumb tour visits 10 gardens
The Friends of the Adamstown Area Library will hold their Green Thumb Garden Tour on June 10 from 1 to 5 p.m. The tour will begin at the library and will consist of 10 area gardens.
The cost is $10 in advance or $12 on the day of the tour. Proceeds will benefit the library. Call 336-5301 for more information.
The library is located at 3000 N. Reading Road/Route 272.
