Portion of Snyder Lane could soon be 25 mph

By: JACQUELINE WATSON Review Correspondent, Staff Writer

Speed limit concerns for parts of Snyder Lane were addressed at a recent Clay Township board of supervisors meeting.

Complaints have been received by Clay Township about the high speed vehicles travel when passing by Snyder Community Park. The speed limit passing the park is not posted automatically, making the speed limit on the rural road 55 mph. Concerned residents feel that the speed driven past the park is unsafe.

Nearby is also the residential development of Clearview Gardens. The township is allowed to post a speed limit of 25 mph on the strip of road that passes by the development and the park without doing an engineering study. To post a speed limit on that strip of road other than 25 mph would require a study. The board felt that the proximity of the development and the park warranted a low speed of 25 mph.

"I think it’s a good idea to slow people down around the park. You’ve got people walking out. There might be people parking along the street. We’re going to have walking paths in there soon," said vice-chairman Justin Harnish, later adding, "I think I’d be comfortable with 25 through the park area."

Good fortune on horizon Rainbow replaces black clouds for 2012 EHS commencement

By: ANDY FASNACHT Review Editor afasnacht.eph@lnpnews.com, Staff Writer

Emotions were felt by many Friday night, including senior Brittany Bear.

When a rainbow replaced an ominous black cloud literally hanging right over the 2012 commencement exercises for Ephrata High School, it would be easy for the 328 seniors to believe that even more good fortune awaits them than ever imagined.

Forced to put in a "Plan C," as a light rain began falling at War Memorial Field Friday night just as the 117th ceremony began, superintendent Dr. Gerald Rosati seemed to use the power of positive thinking to keep the storms at bay.

"It’s not rain," he said with a smile.

Stating that since the "Plan B" of going to the spacious middle school gymnasium across the highway was no longer feasible, Dr. Rosati said that should the downpours arrive, the event would be taken to the high school auditorium, where the crowd would unfortunately be limited to immediate family members only.

Fortunately for all, not only did the black clouds move through with a minimum of sprinkles–but a few minutes later the sun burst through over the War Memorial Cemetery, and moments later, a rainbow caught formed above the football scoreboard and caught the attention of nearly all in attendance.

Police officer lauded for fire rescue

By: Alice Hummer Review Correspondent, Staff Writer

The June 11 East Cocalico Supervisors meeting was held at the Reamstown Fire Hall. This annual off-site meeting makes it easier for citizens interested in local government to attend.

Special recognition was given to East Cocalico Police Officer Brian Dilliplaine for his heroic act of bravery at the December 2011 house fire in Stevens. Officer Dilliplaine broke the fall of a young woman who jumped from the second story of the burning residence, which was engulfed in flames, into the black, smoky night. Officer Dilliplaine is credited with saving her life.

Police Chief George Beever said Officer Dilliplaine received the Lancaster County Fire Chief’s Bravery Award at the association’s May 20 banquet.

"We congratulate Officer Dilliplaine," said supervisor chairman Doug Mackley. "It is nothing short of miraculous that he arrived in time to be on with the 911 dispatcher and to locate, in that pitch black night with heavy smoke, the young woman and rescue her. The 22 police officers and all of our volunteer firemen put their lives on the line every time they answer a call. We appreciate what they do very much."
