Council clarifies skate park position

By: GARY P. KLINGER Review Correspondent, Staff Writer

"We are interested in moving forward with a new skate park but not at this time or with any specific location."

That was the official position Ephrata Borough Council member Tom Reinhold asked council to agree on with regard to discussion of a new skate park to replace the one displaced by the renovations to the Ephrata Community Pool.

Council had not been scheduled to act on a new skate park for at least another year. However, in response to requests made by residents, the matter was brought to the full council working session on June 4. The net result of input from the full council was that more locations should be looked at and considered before moving forward.

Up until the Ephrata Community Pool complex was closed for major renovations at the end of last year’s swimming season, the skate park was located in a fenced-in area under the roof behind the bathhouses. Four locations were considered as possible locations for the new park, including the lower portion of the pool parking lot, an area between the pool and the American Legion in the vicinity of Vine St., the lower portion of the Ephrata Library lot and adjacent to the borough’s ball field and playground on Irene Ave.

Rowe provides incentive to fundraise: $2,500 and she gets a ‘buzz cut’

By: MARSHA DiBONAVENTURO Special To The Review, Staff Writer

In an economic environment where budget cuts and financial uncertainty are common, non-profits are challenged to be creative and compelling in their quest to provide consistent service while raising the funds to ensure that consistency. Downtown Ephrata Inc. (DEI), the grass-roots downtown Ephrata revitalization group, will be revving up a funding campaign shortly, but decided to implement a precursor to that event and have some fun at the same time.

Borough Councilwoman Sue Rowe, the Council Liaison to the DEI Board, threw down the gauntlet at DEI’s June board meeting: "Raise $2,500 by the next board meeting," Rowe said, "and I will get a buzz cut". To add a little spice for the donors, the largest contributor (individual or group) will get to make the first cut.

Bill Warrell, DEI board president, noted that, while volunteers are passionate about the organization they support, most are uncomfortable about getting out there and asking others to part with their hard-earned dollars.

‘Beatles’ come together for Ephrata

Visitors enjoyed a warm summer evening and the music of Beatlemania Again! Tuesday night in Ephrata's Grater Park during the first of the 2012 Concerts by the Creek series. Next up on the schedule are the Kilmaine Saints, who have performed at many Irish festivals. The group will take the stage on July 24 at 6:30 p.m. (Photo by Stan Hall)

Free fireworks show set to go off

Just one more week until another spectacular free fireworks show in Ephrata gets off the ground.

The show is set to go off at 9:30 p.m. on Wednesday, July 4 from the current location behind the Ephrata Middle School, where it has been since moving from War Memorial Field 12 years ago. Rain date is July 5.

Schaefer Pyrotechnics will once again be the vendor setting off the fireworks.

More expansion in East Cocalico

By: ALICE HUMMER Review Correspondent, Staff Writer

New single family dwellings in 2012 increased to six, with two more building permits issued in May, East Cocalico Zoning Officer Tony Luongo reported at the June 20 board of supervisors meeting "That’s two more homes than in all of 2011," said Luongo.

On the Route 272 corridor, more parking will be needed for Zia Maria Restaurant’s approved deck expansion, according to Luongo.

"That will be met by reconfiguring the parking lines from 10′x 20′ to 9′x18′," he said.

Also on Route 272, Babel Investment LLC., owners of Penn Dutch Motel (which formerly was know as Penn Dutch, Twilight and Knights Inn) will put in soil, grade and seed as needed, a ditch on the property alongside the driveway entrance which washes debris into the roadway during storms.

Also at the meeting, supervisors agreed to permit truck parking on the property of 1975 N. Reading Road. This was done following consultation of the other municipalities who co-own the property (Adamstown, Denver and West Cocalico Township).

Rental rates approved were $75 per month for trucks, $250 per month for construction trailers and lower rates for storage of piles of construction materials.
