Cocalico opens L-L playoffs vs. Comets
A year ago, the Cocalico girls lacrosse team reached new heights for its program, advancing all the way to the District Three finals and earning the first State playoff berth in school history.
Now, a year older and a year wiser, the Lady Eagles could be poised for another long post-season run.
Cocalico (16-1) kicks off post-season play tonight (Wednesday) at Warwick (5:30 p.m.) where the Section Two champions will face Section One runner-up Penn Manor in the L-L League semifinals. Section One champ Manheim Township will play LCD/Lancaster Catholic in the nightcap at 7:30 p.m. with the winners advancing to Friday’s finals at Penn Manor, beginning at 5:30 p.m.
The Lady Eagles enter play coming off their first loss of the season after falling to unbeaten Manheim Township, 18-4 on Friday. Cocalico defeated Penn Manor, 10-9 in the lone meeting of the season between the two schools back on April 27.
As mentioned above, this past Friday Cocalico met Township in a battle of unbeatens, but this one proved to be all Blue Streaks as they cruised to the 14-point win.
Cocalico’s Avery Longstaff did give the Lady Eagles an early 1-0 lead before the Blue Streaks went on a 6-1 run to take command midway through the first half.
The Lady Eagles did cut the deficit to 6-3 on goals by Kari Longstaff but Township went on a late 3-0 spurt to make it 9-3 at the half.
Then with the score 7-4 in favor of Township early in the second half, the Blue Streaks went on an 8-0 run to salt this one away.
Katelyn Costanza tallied the other goal for Cocalico, which was outshot, 20-17 for the game.
Ephrata, meanwhile, closed out its season last Thursday with a 22-4 season-ending loss to Warwick.
The host Warriors outscored Ephrata, 16-2 in the first half and breezed to the win.
Scoring goals for the Lady Mounts, who ended the season winless at 0-18, were Megan Rothweiler, Kirsten Ueberroth, Brooke Overly and Brittany Smith.
Warwick outshot the Lady Mounts, 38-19.
Ephrata also was in action last Wednesday at home where the Lady Mounts dropped a 19-11 decision to visiting Carlisle in non-league action.
The Thundering Herd built a 10-4 advantage at half-time and held off Ephrata for the victory.
Rachel Stauffer scored three goals to pace the Lady Mounts while Katie Albright, Emily Bonomo and Overly each added a pair of tallies in the loss.
Rachel Anderson and Ueberroth also found the net for Ephrata, which got a pair of assists from Anderson, and one each from Emma Frees and Ueberroth.
Katie Hammaker saved 19 as Ephrata was outshot, 49-38. More GIRLS LAX, page B-3
