Ephrata High School senior Kyle Smith comes from a family of soccer referees.
He says tagging along to his mom Tina and older brother Brandon’s games gave him the itch to try it out as well.
"I was going to the games that they were reffing so I just decided to try it," Kyle said.
Good thing.
A Grade 8 referee since 2008, Smith has earned the right to take the field in some of the most prestigious events in the area. He has worked the US Youth Soccer Olympic Development Program Region I Championships in 2011 and took the field as center in the Under-12 final at the US Youth Soccer Region I Championships.

Mike Lammer claims gold Chad Lammer, Dumas advance to Districts
By: TODD RUTH Review Sports Editor truth.eph@lnpnews.com, Staff Writer
Mike Lammer doesn’t claim to be the best dancer in the family. That distinction goes to his younger brother Sean, a freshman, who is a rising star on the local dance and theater scene.
But while the elder Lammer may not be up to his brother’s level on the dance floor, he is pretty good on his feet as well. And he proved that this past Saturday night in the 145 pound finals at the Section Three Wrestling Tournament at Hempfield High School.
Playing the "take-him-down, let-him-up game," the Ephrata senior secured a whopping eight takedowns vs. Elco’s Zach Layser in a 17-4 rout which clinched his first sectional title.
"I’m just really happy right now," Lammer said after winning the gold. "I knew if I came in here and wrestled my own matches they’d most likely go my way."
Ephrata Coach Josh Clair agreed.
"Mike was definitely hands down better than anybody at his weight," he said. "Everyone knows his strength is on his feet and once he got it going…When he’s on top of his game he wrestles very well, like he did tonight."

It was a golden weekend for Cocalico seniors Teddy Wolf and Kam Mueller.
The top seeds at their respective weight classes lived up to that billing at the Section IV Wrestling Tournament held at Governor Mifflin Intermediate School.
Wolf captured his first sectional title Saturday night with a 7-2 victory over Garden Spot’s Tanner Leid in the finals at 152 pounds. Mueller followed in the 182-pound finals with an equally impressive performance, knocking off Governor Mifflin’s Marcus Johnson, 6-1, to claim his first section crown.
With the titles, both wrestlers punched their tickets to the District Three Tournament, which will be held Friday and Saturday at Hersheypark Arena. It will be the second-straight season Wolf and Mueller are heading to Districts after both wrestlers placed second at sectionals a year ago.
