Mounts set school record in win vs. CV
The Ephrata High School rifle team set a school record last Thursday in a 498-468 victory over Conestoga Valley.
The Mounts’ 498 total was a new record as Josh Ruth, Brody Hoshour and Nate Lapp all turned in perfect scores of 100 while Jordan Crills and Ryan Fritz shot a pair of 99s.
Tuesday afternoon, Ephrata (6-3) continued its winning ways with a 494-488 victory at home vs. Garden Spot. Four Ephrata shooters turned in scores of 99 to lead the way. They included Pat Rehm, Fritz, Hoshour and Will Young. Ruth rounded out the top five with a 98.
On Jan. 17, the Mounts added a 494-487 victory over host Elizabethtown.
In that one, Lapp, Ruth, Hoshour and Fritz all had 99s while Crills followed with a 98 for the victorious Mounts.
Recently, Coach John Rupp said the team has a nice mix of youth and experience, not to mention depth with a roster of 21. Ephrata has had more than 10 total shooters count scores in its nine matches this season.
"We have some really good shooting juniors who are going to be good next year if they all stay together," Rupp said. "Basically the whole team has a lot of potential. I don’t have anybody who doesn’t have a good bit of potential. I have at least six shooters if they shoot well, on any given day can shoot with anybody in the league. There is no doubt about that."
Trent Lehman and Rehm are the lone two seniors on the squad. A solid crew of juniors include Ruth, Hoshour, Crills, Fritz and Abby Smith, while sophomores Lapp and Young as well as freshman Rachel Weaver make this a team that looks well-armed to battle in the future.
"The future does look bright for this team," Rupp said. "We had a shot to win it this year. We lost to Garden Spot by one point and we lost to Manheim Central by one point. All it would have taken was a shot on a target in each match and we would have one loss instead of three."
The Mounts, who trail Manheim Central (7-1) and Manheim township (6-2) in the standings, have three regular season matches to go starting with Thursday’s road match at Wilson. Ephrata hits the road Jan. 31 at Manheim Township before ending the regular season Feb. 2 at home vs. Manheim Central. More RIFLE, page B-5
