Woody waste site slated for cameras
By: ALICE HUMMER Review Correspondent, Staff Writer
East Cocalico Township supervisors are in possession of a large, heavy pool table. The catch is that it has no legs and was deposited illegally in the township’s woody waste area.
Supervisor chair Doug Mackley and other supervisors Alan Fry and Noelle Fortna all shared disappointment at their Nov. 16 meeting that a few people ruin having the woody waste site available all the time for the optimum convenience of residents.
"We’ll have to start locking it again during off hours," Mackley commented.
Township manager Mark Hiester will include the purchase of cameras in next year’s budget to better monitor the woody waste site.
Supervisors noted that several residents asked about having a place to dump leaves and grass.
"Martin’s Mulch takes these (grass and leaves) for a nominal fee per bag — I think it’s 50 cents," said Mackley.
"I think we need to address the Woody Waste issues first," Fortna said.
The Stewart Annexation Plan, which includes the relocation of a dwelling from Ridge to Reinhold roads, is seeking relief regarding the financial security deposit. Supervisors, in discussion, said that they would consider an alternate approach, that being one which requests an amount for the demolition of the property, such as $2,500.

Random rumblings
Todd Ruth
Ephrata Review
Sports Editor The Lancaster-Lebanon League, and Section One in particular, flexed its muscles in the recently completed high school field hockey season which culminated Saturday with Hempfield beating Warwick 2-1 in overtime in the State AAA title game.
All year long, Lower Dauphin and Emmaus were the prohibitive favorites to be playing Saturday, but that all changed when Central Dauphin, a team Warwick handled 4-1 in the semifinals, knocked off LD in the quarters and Hempfield shocked Emmaus, 4-3 in the semis.
That set up Saturday’s All-LL showdown at Whitehall, the fourth game between the two teams this year. Warwick held a two games to one edge, but Hempfield saved its best for last, scoring with 23 seconds left in overtime to win its first State title in thrilling fashion.
How strong was Section One this season? Well, Penn Manor won the section title, Warwick captured the L-L League crown and Hempfield earned the big State prize. Not too shabby.
Section Two was strong as well with Cocalico winning another section crown before getting to within one win of another State berth. In addition to the Lady Eagles, Ephrata and L-S both made the League and District playoffs while Manheim Central, the fourth place team, made a deep run to the State semifinals in AA.

Ephrata High School (EHS) welcomed 24 newcomers to its halls of learning last month when students from Eberbach, Germany traveled to Lancaster County for a two-week stay.
"We have more German (exchange) students this year than we did" ever before, said Bonnie Strohl, who has taught German at Ephrata since 1974. "I think it’s just the reputation of the exchange. It’s become so popular they have a lottery in Germany."
More than 50 students from Hohenstaufen-Gymnasiums Eberbach, the school in Ephrata’s German sister-city, submitted applications in hopes of taking part in the exchange program, which has been going on since 1989. Less than half of those who applied were picked for the trip.

Are taxes on rise here next month?
By: GARY P. KLINGER Review Correspondent, Staff Writer
It now appears that the tax man’s visit will be a bit more painful in Ephrata Borough soon, as residents will face a fate similar to their counterparts across much of the area with increased taxes.
That was just part of the monthly report of the budget and finance committee to borough council’s monthly regular meeting on Monday night.
By how much taxes will increase remains uncertain until each committee is able to review its respective budget proposals in search of cuts and savings which may help to ease the pain a bit. In the past, council members have been vocal about trying to adopt a budget with little to no increase in taxes, especially considering the on-going economic unrest facing residents. However, it now appears that an increase may be inevitable.
In its report to council the committee discussed the projected shortfall in the General Fund’s 2012 proposed budget. Staff revised the proposed budget and made adjustments to revenues and expenditures where applicable. A change in the process of collecting earned income tax will result in a shortfall of approximately $100,000 in 2012 until the collection efforts are perfected.

Denver waits for write-in results
By: MICHELLE REIFF Review Staff mreiff.eph@lnpnews.com, Staff Writer
The Nov. 8 election identified two-thirds of the new members of Denver Borough Council.
Republican candidates Walter Fink and Michael Cohick were on the ballot and were elected to serve on borough council for the next four years. The filling of the third seat will be based on the results of the write-in vote.
On Nov. 9, Denver Borough Manager Mike Hession spoke with a representative from the Lancaster County Board of Elections concerning the election results for the third borough council seat.
Hession said that according to Paul at the board of elections, his office would not begin reviewing the write-in ballots until Nov. 14.
"If there are multiple write-in candidates with the same number of votes, the county will send each a letter to see if they are interested in serving and all who are will be invited to the board of elections office in Lancaster in late November/early December to draw to see who will win the seat," said Hession after speaking to the board representative.
The official ballot results posted on the Denver Fire Company door indicated that 11 write-in votes were cast for the third borough council seat on Nov. 8.
