Lizzie Stover, 92, homemaker

Lizzie Z. Stover, 92, of Denver, passed away Sunday, Nov. 27, 2011 at Fairmount Homes Retirement Community.

She was born in West Earl Township to the late Daniel N. and Anna (Zimmerman) Hoover and was the wife of the late Charles Stover, who died in 1979. Lizzie was a member of Groffdale Mennonite Church, Groffdale Conference. Lizzie was a homemaker, who worked as a teacher in her early years.

She is survived by a brother: Harvey Z. Hoover, of Ephrata; a sister: Annie Z. Weaver, of Orrstown; and many nieces and nephews.

Lizzie was preceded in death by her brothers: Frank Z., Amos Z. and Ivan Z. Hoover; and a sister: Francis Z. Martin.

Funeral services will be held on Dec. 1 at 9 a.m. at the residence of Ivan G. Hoover, 121 N. Farmersville Road, Ephrata, with further services at 9:30 a.m. from the Groffdale Mennonite Church (Groffdale Conference). Interment will be in the adjoining church cemetery.

Jayne Royer, 92, Indian River VP

Jayne H. (Hopkins) Royer, 92, formerly of Quarryville, Ephrata and Nacogdoches, Texas, died peacefully Thursday, Nov. 24, 2011 at home in Schwenksville surrounded by her family after a long illness.

Jayne graduated from Quarryville High School in 1934. She attended Brenau College in Gainesville, Ga., for two years and Lancaster Business School for two years. She was employed by Indian River International located in Lancaster and Nacogdoches, Texas, for 40 years. She retired in 1995 as corporate vice president. Jayne was a member of the Altrusa Club of Nacogdoches, Texas, for 29 years, serving as president for three terms. She was also a member of the Business and Professional Women’s Club of Nacogdoches, Texas, serving as president for one term, a member of Eastern Star, Nacogdoches #428 OES and a member of the Ephrata Women’s Club during her years in Ephrata. Jayne was also a member of Lower Providence Presbyterian Church, Norristown.

She is survived by her children: Kim, wife of George Murray, of Schwenksville; Michael C., husband of Hildegard Royer, of Falmouth Maine; and David H., husband of Cheryl Royer, of Chanhassen, Minn.; her brother: James Hopkins; and six grandchildren: Christine Anne, Michael Adam, Amanda Margaret, Emily Amanda, Juliana Marie and Olivia Margaret.

Ezra Martin, 97, dairy farmer

Ezra M. Martin, 97, formerly of Clay Township, passed away Thursday, Nov. 24, 2011, at Landis Homes.

Born in May City, Iowa, he was the son of the late Elam and Lavina (Gingrich) Martin and was the husband of the late Edith S. (Witmer) Martin, who passed away on Nov. 23, 2002 .

He was a member of Indiantown Mennonite Church, Ephrata, where he served as a Deacon for over 40 years and was a Brotherly Aid representative of the church. Ezra was a dairy farmer and enjoyed traveling. His interest in history and genealogy caused him to publish a book on the Mennonite settlement of May City, Iowa, his birthplace.

Surviving are six sons: Clifford R., husband of Joyce (Denlinger) Martin, of Bird In Hand; Nelson E., husband of Mary (Shertzer) Martin, of Bethel; Gerald E., husband of Carolyn (Hostetter) Martin, of Ephrata; Stephen L., husband of Betty (Brubaker) Martin, of Ephrata; Gilbert N., husband of Sandy (Ginder) Martin, of Elizabethtown; and Calvin J., husband of Karalee (White) Martin, of Crawfordsville, Iowa; two daughters: Anna Elaine Martin, of Landis Homes; and Joanne L. Denlinger, of Strasburg; 18 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; and sister: Vera Martin, of Ephrata.

Leon Hoover, 18, farmer

Leon H. Hoover, 18, of Denver, died Friday, Nov. 25, 2011 due to a car/bicycle accident in East Earl Township.

Born in Denver, he was the son of Phares M. and Florence Z. (Hoover) Hoover, with whom he resided.

He worked on the home farm and attended the Reidenbach Mennonite Church.

Surviving in addition to his parents are four brothers: John, husband of Susie (Martin) Hoover, of Denver; and Nathan, Matthew and Michael, all at home; four sisters: Arlene, Maryann, Minerva and Jane, all at home; maternal grandfather: John Hoover, of Leitchfield, Ky.; and paternal grandparents: Henry and Alma Hoover, of Hopkinsville, Ky.

Preceding him in death is an infant sister: Lydia Hoover.

Funeral services were held on Nov. 30 at the late home with further services at the Reidenbach Mennonite Church, New Holland, with the Bishop Allen Hoover officiating. Interment took place in the adjoining cemetery.

Jacob Gockley, 86, WWII vet, turnpike supervisor

Jacob M. Gockley, 86, of Columbia, passed away Tuesday, Nov. 22, 2011, at Hospice of Lancaster County, Mount Joy.

Born in Rothsville, he was the son of the late Aaron and Mamie (Miller) Gockley and was the husband of the late Mabel (Ketler) Gockley.

Jacob was of the Methodist faith. He enjoyed fishing, traveling in his motor home and was an avid Eagles fan. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II as a sergeant combat engineer and was in the Battle of the Bulge. He received the European African Middle Eastern service medal and five Bronze Stars.

Jacob retired as a supervisor from the Pennsylvania Turnpike.

Surviving are two sons: Michael A., husband of Leigh (Pfautz) Gockley, of Lititz; and Larry, husband of Judy Gockley, of Lufkin, Texas; daughter, Deb A., wife of Randy Connor, of Columbia; stepson: Thomas A. Gaul, of Lititz; and nine grandchildren: Todd Frederick; Jason Frederick; Jon, husband of Katrina Frederick; Morgan Gockley; Claire Gockley; Michelle Gaul; Tom Gaul Jr.; Tracey Winter; and John Gockley.

Besides his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by his stepson: Robert R. Gaul; his sister: Dorothy Myers; and his brother: Samuel Gockley.

Leona Enck, 103, Ephrata volunteer

Leona May Enck, 103, of Elizabethtown, formerly of McConnellsburg and Ephrata, passed away Monday, Nov. 21, 2011 at Masonic Village in Elizabethtown.

She was the widow of the late John H. Enck who passed in 2001. Her first husband, the late Lloyd Heagy, passed away in 1947.

Leona was a longtime and active resident of Ephrata. She was a member of Bethany United Church of Christ and a past member of the Ephrata Women’s Club, Ephrata Flower Club and the Shade Tree Commission.

Leona was the last of her immediate family and is survived by a nephew: R. Dale Long, of Elizabethtown.

She was preceded in death by her parents: the late Isaac R. and Annie (Shearer) Walborn; and a sister: Alverta Long.

Funeral services were held at Masonic Village, Elizabethtown, on Nov. 25. Interment was in Ruhl’s United Methodist Cemetery, Rapho Township.

Services were under the care of Paul L. Gravenor Home For Funerals, Ephrata.

Ruth Dussinger, 83, cafeteria manager

Ruth G. Dussinger, 83, of Lancaster, formerly of Lincoln-Ephrata, passed away Sunday, Nov. 27, 2011 at Mt. Joy Hospice of Lancaster County after a lengthy illness.

She was the wife of Addison R. Dussinger. Born in Lincoln-Ephrata, she was the daughter of the late Roy and Edith (Miller) Keller.

Ruth was a graduate of Ephrata High School and worked as the cafeteria manager at Penn Manor School District.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by a son: Rick, husband of Linda Dussinger, of Palmyra; and two granddaughters: Alyson, wife of Matt Merritt, of Reading; and Rebecca Dussinger, of Mechanicsburg.

Memorial services will be held at Paul L. Gravenor Home For Funerals, 100 W. Main St., Ephrata, at 8 p.m. on Dec. 1, with the Rev. John C. Miller officiating. Interment will be private at the convenience of the family.

Jadon Dimitris, 7 1/2 months, enjoyed story time

Jadon A. Dimitris, 7 1/2 months, of Denver, went to be with Jesus and his sister, Ruthie, on Thursday evening, Nov. 24, 2011 at Ephrata Community Hospital.

Born in Houston, Texas, on April 11, he was the son of Derrick A. and Sarah J. Miller Dimitris, of Denver. His parents attend Immanuel Free Reformed Church in Schoeneck.

Jadon enjoyed interacting with people, being talked and sung to and having stories read to him. He endeared his family and his nurses to himself with his bright smiles and adoring eyes. He was a stubborn fighter, but now he can finally rest in Jesus’ arms.

In addition to his parents, Jadon is survived by a brother: Derrick Allen Dimitris Jr.; and a sister: Maryann F. Dimitris, both at home; his maternal grandparents: Jim and Carol Bowman Miller, of Palmyra; paternal grandfather: Harold "Butch" Dimitris, of Lancaster; paternal grandmother: Margaret J. Pugh Dimitris, of Philadelphia; maternal great- grandparents: Henry and Ruth Bowman, of Lititz; and paternal great-grandfather: William H. Pugh, of Florida.

Jadon was preceded in death by a sister: Ruth Kathryn Dimitris, in 2007; maternal great- grandparents: Paul and Kathryn Miller; paternal great-grandfather: Harold Dimitris Sr.; and paternal great-grandmother: Sandra Axe.

Paul Burkholder, 69, business owner

Paul S. Burkholder, 69, of Akron, died Monday, Nov. 21, 2011, in Ephrata Community Hospital.

Born in Myerstown, he was a son of the late Clarence M. and Ruth (Sauder) Burkholder.

Before retiring, Paul was the owner and operator of Burkholder Plumbing & Heating, Narvon. He loved to golf, go fishing and bowling with his family.

Surviving is a daughter: Janice M., wife of Larry R. Bollinger, of Reinholds; sons: David E. Burkholder, of Ephrata; and P. Scott, husband of Tracy (Peters) Burkholder, of Leola; 12 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; sisters: Geraldine, wife of Milt Hilman, of Mt. Joy; and Sylvia, wife of Richard Conrad, of Brownstown; and brothers: Richard, husband of Jane (Groff) Burkholder, of Stevens; Clarence, husband of Nancy (Burkholder) Burkholder, of Myerstown; Melvin Burkholder, of Mt. Gretna; and Roy, husband of Lorraine (Weaver) Burkholder, of Tyrone.

Brothers: Ronald and Earl Burkholder preceded him in death.

Private services will be held by the family.
