Anna Loose, Ford Leather worker
Anna Loose, 90, of Akron, passed away Sunday, Oct. 23, 2011 at Hospice of Lancaster County, Mount Joy.
Born in Hopeland, she was the daughter of the late George A. and Ella (Edwards) Ruth and was the wife of the late Arthur N. Loose who passed away in 2007.
She was a member of Grace Evangelical Congregational Church in Akron and had worked for Yorktown Manufacturing Co. in Ephrata and Ford Leather Co. in Akron.
Anna is survived by two sons: Leslie, husband of Judy Loose, of Stevens; and Anthony, husband of Linda Loose, of Lititz; six grandchildren: Austin Loose, Kristin Clark, Steven Loose, Tammy High, Barry High and Darren High; 13 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.
Besides her husband and parents, Anna was preceded in death by three sisters: Irene Ruth, Sadie Weik and Ella Eshelman; five brothers: Miles, Warren, Enos, Clarence and Charles; and her half brother: Raymond.
A funeral service was held on Oct. 26 at the Grace Evangelical Congregational Church, Akron, with Pastor Leslie Cool officiating. Burial took place in the Rothsville United Zion Cemetery.

Paul Kofroth, 72, farmer, pastor
Paul David Kofroth, 72 of Cumberland, passed away at his residence Sunday, Oct. 16, 2011.
Paul was born in Ephrata, the son of the late Paul H. and Helen (Fry) Kofroth.
He enjoyed farming and working outdoors on the family farm. He worked as a truck driver for Horns Trucking and Larsons Express and he formerly served as the pastor for the Gaysport and Rural Dale United Methodist churches.
Paul is survived by his loving wife: Mary (Phillips) Kofroth, whom he married Dec. 24, 1977; three sons: Mark, husband of Francia Kofroth; Bruce, husband of Tina Kofroth; and David Gould; three daughters: Judy, wife of Darrel Sollenberger; Wanda Kofroth; and Wenda, wife of John Calvert; two sisters: Sarah Ann Zimmerman; and Anna, wife of Leon Good; 14 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, Paul is preceded in death by one son: David Kofroth; a daughter: Dawn Kofroth; and a brother: Larry Kofroth.
Funeral services were held on Oct. 20 at the Claysville United Methodist Church, with Rev. Ken Ogg officiating.

Rufus Eberly, 90, Dana retiree
Rufus B. Eberly, 90, of Denver, passed away Wednesday, Oct. 19, 2011 at The Reading Hospital and Medical Center.
Born in Denver, he was the son of the late Abraham and Edna (Brubaker) Eberly and was the husband of the late Pearl M. (Schell) Eberly, who passed away in 2009. They had been married 67 years.
Rufus was a member of St. John’s (Hain’s) United Church of Christ in Wernersville. He worked as a tow motor operator for Dana Corp., retiring after 30 years.
He is survived by numerous cousins.
Services will be private and at the convenience of the family.

Peggy Cisney, 78, Macke worker
Peggy A. Cisney, 78, of Lancaster, passed away Friday, Oct. 21, 2011 at Heart of Lancaster Regional Medical Center.
She greatly missed her husband of 59 years, Harold K. "Bud" Cisney, who passed away in May of this year.
Born in Lancaster, Peggy was the daughter of the late Irvin and Verna Miller. She was a graduate of J. P. McCaskey High School and formerly worked for Macke Vending and Servomation. She also spent time working as a cafeteria attendant.
Peggy will be greatly missed by her children and grandchildren who loved her dearly.
She is survived by four sons: Keith H., husband of Kathleen Cisney, of East Petersburg; Daniel K. Cisney, of Lititz; Douglas E., husband of Jill Cisney, of Lancaster; and Michael S., husband of Michele Cisney, of Ephrata; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Also surviving is a sister: Dorothy Weaver, of Manheim; a brother: Robert Miller, husband of Janice, of Mt. Gretna; and several nieces and nephews.
Peggy was preceded in death by two sisters: Hettie Maroni and Nancy Hess.
The family would like to thank the staff of Heart of Lancaster Regional Medical Center for the compassionate care given to Peggy during her illness.

Doris Zahm, 88, Hess Egg worker, active in church
Doris K. Zahm, 88, of Denver, formerly a resident of Stevens for 28 years, passed away peacefully Thursday, Oct. 13, 2011 surrounded by her loving family.
Born in Freeland, Doris was the daughter of D. Gordon and Mable Haiges-Weaver. She was the widow of the late Harold E. (Buddy) Zahm, who died in June of 1985.
Doris was a member of St. John’s United Church of Christ in Denver, where she served on the Church and Ministry Committee for several years. She also volunteered for the Meals on Wheels, which operates out of St. John’s United Church of Christ. In earlier years she was employed by the S.S. Kresge Co. of Newark, N.J. She also worked at the Lancaster Shopping Center and the former Earl Hess Egg Plant in Ephrata for several years.
Doris was an avid fan of NASCAR and enjoyed working on word puzzles.
She is survived by one son: Charles E. Zahm, of Warfordsburg; two daughters: Sharan, wife of Donald VanBruggen, of Hickory Corners, Mich.; and Ruth Anne, wife of Robert Witmer, with whom Doris resided in Denver. Also surviving are Doris’ brother: Harrison, husband of Spomenka Weaver, of Columbia, S.C.; eight grandchildren; three step grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; 15 step great-grandchildren; nine great-great grandchildren; and five step great-great grandchildren.

Delores Sweigart, 74, homemaker
Delores M. Sweigart, 74, of Stevens, died at home Monday, Oct. 10, 2011.
Born in Newmanstown, a daughter of the late Charles and Sarah (Basom) Knier, her husband, Gerald "Chick" Sweigart, died March 6, 1993.
A homemaker most of her life, she had worked at area textile factories. Delores loved cooking and enjoyed crocheting, puzzles and reading.
Surviving are a daughter: Karen S., wife of Larry G. Simmons, at home; sons: Russell J. Sweigart, companion of Roxanne Miller, of Shillington; and Michael Sweigart, of Ephrata; four grandsons; a great-grandson; sisters: Carol Bohn, Pauletta Gift and Esther Knier; and brothers: James and Theodore Knier.
Graveside services took place on Oct. 17 at Memory Gardens Memorial Park, Ephrata.

Melvin Stupp, 88, vet, truck driver
Melvin R. Stupp, 88, of Spring City, passed away Friday, Oct. 14, 2011 at South Eastern Veterans Center, Spring City.
He was born in Pine Grove to the late Fred and Esther (Heinbach) Stupp and was the husband of the late Verna (Sattizahn) Stupp.
Melvin served in the Navy during World War II. He was a member of Cloister Post #429, American Legion, and enjoyed hunting. During his working years, he was a truck driver and worked for Bethlehem Steel.
Melvin is survived by a daughter: Janice, wife of the late Daryl Spotts, of Stevens; one brother; and two sisters.
In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers and four sisters.
A funeral service will be held Oct. 20 at 10 a.m. at the Stradling Funeral Home, 201 Church Ave., Ephrata, with Rev. Timothy Craven officiating. Interment will take place in the Memory Gardens Memorial Cemetery. Military honors will be accorded by the Red Rose Honor Guard.

Joseph H. Stewart Jr., Lamtech driver
Joseph H. Stewart Jr., 74, of Akron, passed away after a brief illness Monday, Oct. 10, 2011 at his residence.
He was born in Kleinfeltersville to the late Joseph and Arlene (Myer) Stewart and was the husband of Sandra (Bair) Stewart who celebrated their 55th wedding anniversary on Feb. 25.
Joseph was a member of the Ephrata AmVets, Ephrata Elks and Ephrata Masonic Lodge 665 F&AM. He enjoyed the Miami Dolphins, his many hats and B-24 airplanes. He worked as a truck driver for Lamtech.
In addition to his wife, Joseph is survived by two sons: Ricky Lee Stewart, of Virginia, and Troy J. Stewart, of Ephrata; a daughter: Nicole D., wife of Jeffrey Piper, of Akron; grandchildren: Sandra Mae, Jeff Jr., Joseph and Nicolas Piper, Brandon Long and Lauren Stewart.
He was preceded in death by brothers: Edwin and Richard Stewart; and a sister: Joanne Hufford.
A memorial service was held on Oct. 15 at the Stradling Funeral Home, Akron, with Rev. Leslie Cool officiating. Interment will be private at the convenience of the family.

George Starkey, 76, vet, educator, tenor soloist
George Paul Starkey, 76, of Denver, formerly of Lansdale, passed away surrounded by his family Monday, Oct. 10, 2011.
Born in Mahanoy City, he was the son of the late Walter and Helen (Rajkowski) Starkey. He was the loving husband of Carol Rae (Eichman) Starkey for 54 years.
George graduated from Mahanoy City High School in 1953. He served in the U.S. Army from 1955 to 1957 and went on to get his BA at Millersville University and an MBA at Temple. Serving 33 years in the Pennsylvania educational system, George held positions as a teacher, principal and administrator. He retired in 1994 as business manager for North Penn School District and then headed a school district consortium for eight years. He was a featured tenor soloist in various churches, community theater, operas and choral societies. His interests included golf and football.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his son: Todd, husband of Kim Starkey, of Doylestown; and daughter: Lynne, wife of Dan Nicholas, of Concord, N.C.; six grandchildren; brothers: Walter, Joseph and Ronald; and sister: Helene.
He was preceded in death by his daughter: Lydia Wiker.
Services were held at Christ Lutheran Church, Kulpsville, on Oct. 14.

Elizabeth M. Shirk, Shirlee retiree
Elizabeth M. Shirk, 88, of Akron, formerly of Terre Hill, died peacefully with her family at her side Friday, Oct. 14, 2011 at the home of her daughter.
Born in Lebanon, she was the daughter of the late Robert and Elizabeth (Achey) Shilling. She was married to Robert Shirk, with whom she celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary.
Elizabeth retired in 1986 from Shirlee Manufacturing in Terre Hill. She attended Pennsylvania School for the Deaf in Philadelphia and was a member of the Keystone Deaf Senior Citizens. She enjoyed traveling, camping and spending time at the Tioga and Pocono cabins.
Surviving in addition to her husband are two daughters: Roberta, wife of Jon Winkelspecht, of Akron, with whom she resided; and Elizabeth, wife of Michael Panarella, of Medford, N.J.; two sons: Lance, husband of Sandra (Witmer) Shirk, of Willow Street; and John, husband of Tamara (Heidlauf) Shirk, of Ephrata; 14 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; a sister: Phyllis Dove, of Palmyra; and a brother: Richard Shilling, of Lebanon.
Preceding her in death are two brothers: Robert and Harry; and a sister: Harriet McLucas.
Funeral services were held on Oct. 18 at the Eckenroth Home for Funerals, Terre Hill, with the Rev. Russell Rockwell officiating. Interment took place in the Terre Hill Cemetery.
