Stephanie Mash, 56, nurse
Stephanie H. Mash, 56, of Ephrata, passed away Monday, Sept. 19, 2011 at the Essa Flory Hospice Center, Lancaster.
Born in Baltimore, Md., she was the daughter of Jean Blake Mash of Florida and the late Sidney Mash. She is survived by her companion of 27 years, Charles A. Marrone, of Ephrata.
A registered nurse, Stephanie worked for Lancaster Regional Medical Center in home health nursing. She graduated from St. Paul’s School for Girls and Towson University, both in Maryland, with a BS in English, San Francisco College of Mortuary Science and also York College, with a BS in Nursing. She had a love for animals, especially horses. Stephanie wanted to own a race horse.
Surviving, in addition to her mother and companion are an aunt: Eleanor Fogel, and cousin: Melanie, wife of Guy Cook, all of Baltimore, Md.
Her funeral service was held at Manheim Brethren In Christ Church on Sept. 24, with Pastor Lou Astuto officiating. Interment took place in Druid Ridge Cemetery.

Betty Gensemer, Berkshire retiree
Betty Marie Gensemer, 85, of Denver, passed away Wednesday, Sept. 21, 2011 at Ephrata Manor.
She was born in Wernersville to the late Clinton and Mary (Eckenroth) Hoppman and was the wife of the late Paul A. Gensemer.
Betty was a member of member of Swamp Christian Fellowship. She was an avid Phillies fan and enjoyed playing cards. Betty worked in the pairing department of Berkshire Knitting Mills until her retirement.
She is survived by her brother: Charles E., husband of Shirley (Hornberger) Hoppman, of Denver; six nieces and nephews: Beth A. Fetter, of Stevens; Mark Hoppman, of Ephrata; Lisa Ferry, of Denver; Robert Barto, of Bernville; Eric Phillips, of Clay; and Charlotte Preese, of Maryland; and a sister in law: Ruth Phillips, of Clay.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a nephew: Dion Hoppman.
Her funeral service was held on Sept. 27 at the Swamp Christian Fellowship Church, Reinholds, with Pastor Craig Snow officiating. Interment took place in the Swamp Cemetery in West Cocalico Township.

Carrie Davidson, Quinlan retiree
Carrie M. Davidson, 90, of Denver, passed away Monday, Sept. 19, 2011 at the Maple Farms Nursing Home.
Born in Reading, she was the daughter of the late Elizabeth (Ruth) Ditzler and was the wife of the late Howard L. Davidson who passed away in 1991.
She had been a member of Faith United Evangelical Lutheran Church in Denver. She collected owls and enjoyed going to the mountains and fishing as hobbies. Carrie worked at Quinlan Pretzels for more than 27 years, prior to retirement.
Carrie is survived by two children: Larry L., husband of Darla J. (Griffith) Davidson, of Ephrata; and Barbara A., wife of Craig E. Bachtel, of Stevens; eight grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and a brother: Randolph, husband of Patricia (Parsons) Ditzler, of Mohnton.
Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by two sons: Dennis and William Davidson; a sister: Mary Stoltz; and a brother: Wayne Ditlzer.
Funeral services were held on Sept. 23 at the Roseboro Stradling Funeral Home, Denver, with Pastor Timothy Craven officiating. Burial took place in the Fairview Cemetery Annex.

Billy Crawshaw, vet, Ford New Holland inspector
Billy G. Crawshaw, 78, of New Holland, passed away Wednesday, Sept. 21, 2011 at Denver Nursing Home.
He was born in Las Animas, Colo., to the late Arthur and Thelma (Merriman) Crawshaw and was the husband of Eleanor L. Crawshaw.
Billy served in the Korean War with the Navy on the USS Wisconsin. He was a former member of Reinholds VFW and New Holland American Legion. An inspector for Ford New Holland, he retired in 1991 after working there 36 years. After retirement, he worked at Manheim Auto Auction.
Surviving in addition to his wife are two daughters: Nancy Snyder, of Birdsboro; and Sally, wife of Michael Hackman, of Ephrata; six grandchildren: Mitchell Snyder, Vincent Snyder, Heidi Crawshaw, Jeremy Hackman, Laura Hackman and Shaun Hackman; eight great-grandchildren; and a sister: Doris E. Branch, of Tigard, Ore.
He was preceded in death by a son: David Crawshaw, who died in 1986; and a sister: Judy K. Thomas.
A private funeral will be held at the convenience of the family with interment in the Cedar Hill Cemetery.

Youa Chongtua, 56, nurse
Youa Y. Chongtua, 56, of Reinholds, died Friday, Sept. 23, 2011 in Ephrata Community Hospital.
Born in Xieng Khouang, Laos, a daughter of Chiakee Yang, Nebo, N.C., and the late May Hang, she was the wife of Pao Moua Chongtua for 39 years.
Youa was a member of Hmong Alliance Church, Leola. She was a nurse in Laos and loved gardening, especially flowers and herbs.
Also surviving is a daughter: Xai; sons: Chang Sou, Bong Thong and Lee, all at home; sisters: Soua Chang, Morganton, N.C.; and Deu Hang, Spartanburg, S.C.; and brothers: Tou Txakeeyang, Honolulu, Hawaii; Kou Txakeeyang, Hickory, N.C.; Lang Txkeeyang, Richville, Mich.; True Txakeeyang, Centryville, Va.; and Mang Txakeeyang, Nebo, N.C.
Funeral services will be on Oct. 3 at 9 a.m. from Good Funeral Home, Reamstown, with burial in Muddy Creek Cemetery, Swartzville.

Max L. Steininger, WWII veteran, VFW commander
Max L. Steininger, 86, of Ephrata, passed away on Sunday, Sept. 25, 2011 at United Zion Nursing Home in Lititz.
He was born in Paxtonville, Snyder County, to the late Charles and Minnie (Kuhns) Steininger and was the husband of Fern (Fasnacht) Steininger.
Max was a member of Salem Evangelical Lutheran Church, Ephrata. He was a member and past commander at Ephrata VFW Post 3376. Max worked at Glen-Gary Brick for 48 years and then worked part-time at Ephrata Agway.
A veteran of WWII as a Navy Seabee, he served in the Pacific on Tinian, Molakai and Okinawa islands.
In addition to his wife, Max is survived by a son: Dennis, husband of Peggy Steininger of Brownstown; a brother: Rod Steininger of Akron; two sisters: Carman, wife of Charles Reddig of Akron, and Judy, wife of John Royer of Mt. Airy; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Linda Kimble, and two brothers, James and Ben Steininger.
A memorial service will be held Friday, Sept. 30, 7 p.m. at the Salem Evangelical Lutheran Church, 1331 W. Main St., Ephrata, with Pastor Jeffrey H. Goodman officiating. Private interment will take place in the Lincoln Cemetery.

Deaths of local interest
Andrew J. Glassmyer, 21, of Lititz, died Monday, Sept. 26, 2011 at his residence. A graduate of Warwick High School, he attended Albright College, enjoyed baseball and was an avid Phillies fan. He worked at Lancaster General Hospital (LGH) and was earlier employed at the Giant Food Store in Lititz. His sisters, Jess and Jo-Ann, live in Akron.
Arlene M. Boyer, 80, of Mountville, passed away at home Sunday, Sept. 25, 2011 surrounded by her loving family. She was a cashier, having worked at various grocery stores for 46 years, and retired from the Giant at Stonemill Plaza in 2000. Her daughter, Jolene, wife of Kevin Nauman, lives in Ephrata.
Nancy Jane Diem, 53, of Myerstown, died Sunday, Sept. 25, 2011 in her home. Nancy was a member of the Mt. Aetna Bible Church. She was a loving wife and mother. Her sister, Marjorie, wife of Edwin Zimmerman, lives in Ephrata.
Florence M. Schmidt, 96, of Lancaster, died Saturday, Sept. 24, 2011 at the Mennonite Home, Lancaster. Florence worked as a postal clerk in Ringtown. She was an excellent seamstress, sewing and doing needlework most of her life. Her daughter-in-law, Chloe Schmidt, lives in Ephrata.

Earl Pierce Jr., 88, vet, electrician
Earl Pierce Jr., 88, of New Holland, died Thursday, Sept. 15, 2011 after a brief illness at Garden Spot Village, New Holland.
Born in Reinholds, he was the son of the late Earl and Lillian (Sweigart) Pierce. His first wife, Louise (Ludwig) Pierce, died Dec. 19, 1967, and his second wife, June K. (Houser) Dyer Pierce, died Nov. 2, 2010.
Earl retired in 1985 after 38 years as a maintenance electrician for the former Sperry New Holland.
He was a member of the Evangelical United Methodist Church in New Holland and the New Holland VFW. He enjoyed traveling to world fairs; Florida, Europe and Hawaii; golfing; walking; and watching sports on TV.
During World War II, he served his country in the U.S. Army.
Surviving is a son: John Frederick, husband of Janet L. (Manson) Pierce, of Pittsburgh; two stepsons: Richard L., husband of Judy (Davis) Dyer, of Ephrata, and Ronald L. Dyer, of Greensboro, Md.; a stepdaughter: Narene, wife of George Dowlin, of New Holland; two grandchildren: David John, husband of Angela (Pedicone) Pierce, of Pittsburgh; and Matthew Earl Pierce, of West Mifflin; four step-grandchildren; 16 step-great grandchildren; a sister: Betty, wife of Clyde Pfautz, of Reinholds; and a brother: William Pierce, of Portage, Mich.

Kenneth Parsons, Marine veteran, Kalas supervisor
Kenneth "Butch" A. Parsons, 72, of Stevens, passed away Thursday, Sept. 15, 2011 at his home following a two-year battle with cancer. He was under AseraCare.
Born in Reinholds, he was the son of the late Raymond and Edith (Gellsinger) Parsons and was the husband of Erma (Sweigart) Parsons.
Butch loved the Eagles. He also enjoyed NASCAR and dirt track racing and loved going to races.
A veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps, he worked as a supervisor at Kalas Manufacturing for 40 years.
In addition to his wife, Butch is survived by two sons: Douglas Parsons, of Sinking Spring; and Ronnie Parsons, of Venus, Fla.; his daughter: Lori, wife of Paul Marks, of Sinking Spring; four grandchildren: Trent, Ryan and Ellee Marks and Laura Parsons; and his sister: Patricia, wife of Randy Ditzler, of Sinking Spring.
He was preceded in death by two brothers and four sisters.
Funeral services were held on Sept. 21 at the Roseboro Stradling Funeral Home, Denver, with Pastor Stephen Hollinger officiating. Burial will take place in the Pleasant View Cemetery with full military honors.

Elsie Martin, 94, seamstress
Elsie S. Martin, 94, of Ephrata, passed away Monday, Sept. 12, 2011 at her residence.
She was born in Earl Township to the late Harvey and Maggie (Stauffer) Stauffer and was the wife of the late Landis L. Martin who died in 1996.
Elsie was a member of Cornerstone Mennonite Fellowship, Ephrata. She enjoyed sewing and quilting. She was a member of the Jolly 17ers Pen Pal Club and an avid gardener. She loved her family around her and her cabin in the mountains. She was self-employed as a seamstress.
Elsie is survived by two daughters: Joyce S., wife of the late Isaac M. Stauffer, of Ephrata; Linda S., wife of Eugene W. Reiff, of Ephrata; a son: Blaine S., husband of Donna L. Martin, of Ephrata; grandchildren: Emily, Melanie, Shawn, Justin, Anthony, Sheila and Michelle; great-grandchildren: Kylie, Atticus, London and Maddison; three sisters: Grace S. Weaver, of New Holland; Jeanetta S., wife of Harvey S. Stauffer, of Athens, Wisc.; Gladys S., wife of Lester S. Martin, of Ephrata; and a brother: John S., husband of Lena Weaver, of Elizabethville.
She was preceded in death by her husband: Landis L. Martin; two sisters: Florence S. Stauffer and Louella S. Stauffer; and three brothers: Willis S. Stauffer, Phares S. Stauffer and Henry S. Stauffer.
