Smith ties for fourth in Lanco Ladies Amateur

Ephrata’s Lauren Smith, the reigning Lancaster-Lebanon League golf champion, earned a top five performance in her first Lanco Ladies Amateur Championship held Monday and Tuesday at Pilgrim’s Oak Golf Club in Peach Bottom.

The 2011 EHS graduate who will be off to Kutztown University in the fall, entered Tuesday’s play just two shots off the league after shooting a first-round score of 79. She followed that up with an 82 Tuesday to finish in a tie for fourth overall with Suzette Crandall.

Alli Weaver, a 2009 Warwick graduate who now plays at Murray State, carded a 74 Tuesday to capture her first-ever Lanco Ladies crown with a two-day total of 151. Deb Landis placed second, finished eight strokes behind with a two-day card of 159.

Crystal Quinn finished just one stroke ahead of both Smith and Crandall with 160 total strokes.

Finding its groove

Ephrata Review

Sports Editor After winning the L-L League title in 2010, many (me included) thought it would be a slam dunk for the Ephrata High School baseball team to repeat as champs this past Spring. And there was one main reason for optimism.

Ephrata returned virtually its entire lineup from the ’10 championship team with the exception of Madison Zimmerman, who was their top pitcher. If Ephrata could make up for his absence, it really was a no-brainer for ’11.

Well, as we know now, the Mounts did not win an L-L crown this past spring. While they did win another section title, Ephrata could not put together another post-season run.

And pitching wasn’t really the issue. The emergence of Evan Young and Dusten Rutt more than gave them enough quality arms to compete. Yet, the Mounts went one-and-out in both the L-L League and District playoffs.

For whatever reason, offensively, one through nine, the Mounts just weren’t that well-oiled machine we were used to seeing one year earlier.

Reamstown AA Reds split another twinbill

By: TROY BOYER Special To The Review, Staff Writer

After a week off for the July 4th holiday, the Reamstown Athletic Association Reds of the Berks County Senior Baseball League went back into action on Sunday hosting a doubleheader with the Reading area-based Blue Jays. Coming into play with a record of 5-7, the Reds were looking to get back to .500 and make a move in the league standings, as they began the day only two games out of second place in a tightly-bunched race.

In game one, the Blue Jays got out to a 2-0 lead with single runs in the second and third innings, while the Reds managed only one hit, a first inning double by Dwayne Rauch, which would prove to be the Reds only extra base hit in the twinbill. The Reds finally got on the board in the fourth with a two-out single from Ephrata grad and Cocalico softball assistant Steve Young after a nine-pitch at bat. Unfortunately for the Reds, the Jays pushed their lead back to two again in the fifth when a runner scored from first on a two-out hit thanks to some shoddy defensive play.

Ephrata wins District 10 crown Downs CV 8-3 in title game to earn berth in regionals

By: TODD RUTH Review Sports Editor truth.eph@lnpnews.com, Staff Writer

Tuesday night, Ephrata hoisted the District 10 League trophy. Did so with an impressive 8-3 victory over Conestoga Valley in the championship game of the grueling double-elimination tournament played at War Memorial Field.

But if winning a championship was the most important thing to happen to Ephrata Tuesday night, then earning a chance to remain together as a team and play on next week at regionals was a very close second.

"We love to be together, we love to play ball and the longer we can do it the better," first-year Coach Derek Sipe said following Tuesday’s win. "We came into this weekend on a little bit of a roll and we knew if we don’t succeed and keep going it’s going to be cut short for us and we wouldn’t get that opportunity. So now we can spend another week together, not only to play baseball together but as a group. We have a great time with each other, which helps us on and off the field."
