Stoudt’s supports hero
Stoudt’s Brewing Company, along with Santino’s Restaurant, will be honoring an officer lost in the line of duty.
The Adamstown-based company will team up with the restaurant Aug. 5 and Aug. 6 from 5 to 10 p.m. to host an event at Santino’s Restaurant in Wyomissing. The event will recognize Berks County Deputy Sheriff Kyle Pagerly’s hard work, dedication and passion in protecting his community.
Pagerly was shot and killed while serving a warrant as part of a fugitive task force at a home on Pine Swamp Road in Albany Township.
When task force members arrived at the scene the suspect ran into the woods. Pagerly and his canine pursued the suspect. When officers located the suspect he opened fire with an AK-47, striking Pagerly in the head. Other officers returned fire and killed the subject.
Pagerly was flown to Lehigh Valley Hospital where he succumbed to his wounds. He was a U.S. Army veteran and had served with the Berks County Sheriff’s Department for five years. He also served with the Spring Township Fire Department. He is survived by his wife, Alecia, and his beloved family.

Zoning plan gets OKWest Cocalico planners approve ordinance, map
By: KAREN SHUEY Review Staff kshuey.eph@lnpnews.com, Staff Writer
About 25 West Cocalico Township residents left a special planning commission meeting Thursday with a clearer understanding of a revamped zoning code.
The meeting went much smoother than the board’s first gathering in January to vote on the proposed new ordinance and map, in which 80 angry residents demanded more time to review the code. At that time, the board agreed to table a vote on whether to advance the revised plan.
After allowing township residents a few months to look over the plan and make suggestions, the motion to recommend the new zoning code was passed unanimously.
Residents were first notified of the changes and modified zoning map in a letter mailed Dec. 30 by the township.
The map shows 13 areas of the township proposed for rezoning.
In January, the planning board appeared ready to recommend that township supervisors approve the 297-page document until several residents voiced their opposition.
Twelve residents addressed the board — saying they were confused because the information in the letter was incomplete — before audience members threatened to sue the township if it did not allow the public more time to inspect the document.

Lunches with love
Making The World A Better Place
By Michelle Brenner The national school lunch program helps low income families meet the nutritional needs of their children by offering free or reduced price lunches during the school day.
In the Cocalico School District alone, more than 800 qualifying students participate in this program. Many families depend heavily on this federally supported program in order to manage financially. Unfortunately, during the summer months, these meals are not available to children of families in need. The Cocalico Ministerium, a group of representatives from more than 20 local churches, is attempting to address this need by offering a free summer meal program, entitled "Acts Of Love Summer Lunch Program," to area children.
Every Monday, Wednesday and Friday from July 4 through Aug. 15, free lunches will be distributed to area children at both Denver and Reamstown parks from 12 to 1 p.m. Although registration is encouraged, all attending children will be fed. There are no requirements for qualifying for the program other than a need for assistance.

The
Ephrata
Review The
Ephrata
Review Peter Schorr said that when he visited a sprawling, hilltop facility in Ephrata Borough at the suggestion of a friend, he knew it could be the site of "something ground-breaking, something truely unique."
"It’s been my dream for quite some time to find the perfect place to open a luxury drug and alcohol rehab center with all the amenities — this is it," said Schorr, surveying the construction around him, as busy workers put the finishing touches on his business venture — the Retreat at Lancaster County.
The expansive campus at 1170 S. State St., which began in the 1960s as the Foodergong Lodge, is being transformed into an exclusive 120-bed treatment center.
Schorr said the project, which he said will come with a pricetag of about $10 million when finished, will put the area on the map as home to "the premier drug and alcohol center on the East Coast."
An entrepreneur originally from New York, Schorr has spent a few decades developing the concept.

Reamstown AA Reds split with the Phillies
On a day when the Reamstown Athletic Association Reds of the Berks County Senior Baseball League needed a doubleheader sweep to reach .500 on the season and possibly jump from seventh to third in the league standings, they fell just short. Instead, they earned a twinbill split against their long-time nemesis, the Reichardt Remodeling Phillies.
The friendly rivalry with the Phillies has seen a number of exciting, close ballgames, and Sunday’s two one-run games did not disappoint.
Game one featured a pitcher’s duel between the Phillies’ Craig Sinnamon, who beat Reamstown twice in last year’s playoffs, and the Reds’ Mike Bashore, who had been a "Phillie-killer" in his many years with the Hamburg Astros. The Phillies got out to an early lead in the top of the first inning on a one-out triple which followed a walk and a fielder’s choice. After a hit batter put runners at first and third, Bashore got out of the inning by inducing a double-play grounder to shortstop Ed Flinton. The twin-killing was one of the themes of the doubleheader, as both teams recorded double plays in each of the first two innings of game one, and the Reds turned a total of four on the day.

Red Land ousts Ephrata from regionalsPlayoff run ends with heartbreaking one-run loss
By: BRUCE MORGAN Record Express Sports Editor, Staff Writer
With the exception of one inning, Ephrata pitcher Andre Hoover had Red Land’s offense handcuffed.
Hoover, who had entered the game in the fourth inning in relief of starting pitcher Ryan Brubaker, had done a masterful job of mixing his pitches and enabling his teammates to get the upper hand on Red Land.
So there was no reason not to stick with him going into the bottom of the ninth on Tuesday with Ephrata protecting a three-run lead.
Unfortunately for Ephrata, though, the final three outs proved to be the most elusive, as Cumberland County champ Red Land strung four timely hits together, including a walk-off two-run double by Benjamin Dunmire to cap their come-from-behind 8-7 win in an American Legion Region 4 tournament game at Wenger Field in Fredericksburg.
"They came out swinging. What more can you do?," Ephrata skipper Derek Sipe said. "Hoover was throwing good pitches. They just put them in play and not where we were. Somehow, that’s how baseball works out … I would not change anything (about the ninth). Hoov’s our guy at that point and he’s who we wanted out there."
