Adamstown Borough cuts office hours
By: KAREN SHUEY Review Staff, Staff Writer
In continuing efforts to reorganize Adamstown Borough services, officials announced changes in office hours as of July 1.
Council voted at their June 7 meeting to set new public office hours: 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Monday and Thursday, 9 a.m. to noon on Tuesday and Friday; and 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Wednesday. The office will be closed over the lunch hour.
The change comes after council decided to take a closer look at office procedures and staffing when former borough office manager Carolyn Friesema left her post in April. For the past three years, she had handled the accounting and administrative duties in Adamstown.
The new schedule calls for borough secretary Mary Burkholder to continue her current duties, with public business hours cut back to allow Burkholder some uninterrupted time.
"This is to assist me in being able to do the work I have to do since we are now functioning without two full-time staff people in the office," Burkholder said. "That’s a drastic change, our hours were always 9 to 4. With two people here, we were also open for lunch."

Police costs discussed in West Cocalico
By: KAREN SHUEY Review Staff kshuey.eph@lnpnews.com, Staff Writer
Steve Leed has some suggestions on how the East Cocalico Township police force may be able to cut their budget.
The West Cocalico Township resident showed up at the supervisor’s June 3 meeting armed with support from other community members "fed up" with the rising costs of police service.
At the public meeting Leed said he understood that a majority of the hike is being driven by increases in police salaries, which are under contract, and pensions, which are mandated by the state. But, he added, other items should be deferred in such economically-challenging times.
"West Cocalico shouldn’t have to contribute as much — East Cocalico has the traffic, they have the businesses," Leed told supervisors. "Something has got to be done because too many of the services are being duplicated."
Leed said that in financially tough times, there needs to be more discussion about ways to ease the burden on the taxpayers. Twenty-seven of his neighbors agreed.
Leed came prepared with a list of signatures from residents pleading with the supervisors to take a closer look at decreasing the hours under East Cocalico’s watch.

Review The
Ephrata
Review "It’s a gorgeous night," said Dr. Gerald B. Rosati, superintendent, as the crowd of parents, family and friends gathered for the 116th Ephrata High School commencement on June 8.
Drinking water jugs placed at the bottom of each section of bleachers provided guests with some relief from the mid 90s temperatures as they prepared to share in this milestone in the 295 students’ lives.
After the graduation choir had set the tone for the evening with the "Star Spangled Banner," Dr. Rosati invited the seniors, as they embark on their journey toward their future, to "examine the world from a perspective of contribution…the more you give the more you get in return."
The 2011 class president, Lauren Smith, welcomed those in attendance as they began to celebrate "the end of a journey and the beginning of a lifetime."
Smith recognized those who have been the strongest source of encouragement over the years by asking the parents of the Class of 2011 to stand and be recognized. She then presented her fellow students with her sincere wishes for them for the future.
