Denver discusses ‘non-traditional’ pool passes
By: KIMBERLY MARSELAS Review Correspondent, Staff Writer
Denver households with non-traditional families may be able to buy pool passes at a discount next year.
At its June 27 meeting, borough council debated adding a household rate to its pool pass options. A family pass is currently limited to a mother, father and children under 18 living at the same address.
But borough manager Mike Hession took the expanded pass option to the borough’s recreation committee after several non-traditional families asked if a pass could accommodate adult children or grandparents living in one home.
"The time is probably (here) to recognize that families come in all shapes and sizes," said council president Kevin Brandt. "I think the idea would be to get as many people to the pool as we can."
Some members said a more expensive household pass that covers multiple generations at one house might make sense given the economy; although priced higher than a family pass, it would still offer financial relief compared to individual passes.
But others, including Mayor Adam Webber, said allowing too many people on one pass would be like giving away entrance fees. Others worried that non-Denver residents might take advantage of the pass and sign on with extended family members.

Residents want blight tidied up
By: ALICE HUMMER Review Correspondent, Staff Writer
Stevens resident Steve Brubaker asked East Cocalico Township Supervisors at their June 15 meeting why the owner of a home at 17-19 S. Line Road can’t be forced to clean up his property.
Accompanied by Bobbi Weaver, Kyle Weaver and Ryan Weaver, Brubaker and his neighbors stated that they’ve been working with the township’s zoning office for four years to get the property — which has "old cars sitting in the backyard that are junkers with the potential of attracting rodents — tidied up.
"Some of these photos," which Brubaker presented to supervisors, "show items in the yard which can’t be seen from the road."
"In defense of the township," Luongo added, "we’ve been out and had seven vehicles removed (since the summer of 2009). We’ve had the family clean up. After Good’s Disposal cleaned up the property, it began to get junky all over again."
Supervisor Noelle Fortna asked at what point can the township start the process where the board demands it be cleaned by a certain date or they come in and do it at the cost of the property owner.

History of Bergstrasse Elementary will live on
By: GARY P. KLINGER Review Correspondent, Staff Writer
History may have been taught in the hallowed halls of the former Bergstrasse Elementary School, but soon the school building itself will become history.
The building’s days are numbered as demolition is about to get underway to make way for the campus of Lives Changed By Christ Church. But before meeting with the fate of a wrecking ball, the church took time to allow members of the Cocalico Valley Historical Society one last walk through the building to claim anything of historical significance.
Ephrata Township supervisor and lifetime member of the historical society John Weber and several other society members joined Tim Barley Sr., LCBC’s executive director of multi-site ministries. During the journey through the halls the group was able to identify several items to add to the society’s collection.
Members of the historical society were interested in retaining the original copper letter above the entrance to the building. LCBC also donated the large metal plate placed in the building following its original dedication in 1929 as well as one placed after an addition to the building in 1960. A third addition was added in 1966.

For more than two centuries the property known as Mountain Springs has been an Ephrata landmark. Now, the last remaining original building on the site is getting a new lease on life, with renovations well underway to the mansion’s interior.
The Mountain Springs site was developed to contain a hotel, restaurant and a new office facility. Originally, those plans called for the mansion to be converted into be a meeting space. With extensive improvements being made to the structure, each of the three floors is being reconfigured with that use in mind. The end product will be a three-story office building.
A small addition to the rear corner of the house will be constructed in such a way as to appear to have always been a part of the building. It will house ADA approved bathrooms and an elevator.

Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst, N.J. –Last year, newspaper headlines and TV and radio newscasts blasted our senses with reports of such things as devastating earthquakes in Haiti and Chile, along with massive floods in Pakistan and a volcanic eruption in Iceland.
After a few days, though, media reports moved on to the next big news event. But for the son of an Ephrata woman, picking up the pieces in the aftermath in places like Haiti and Pakistan was just the beginning of business as usual.
Air Force Maj. Timothy A. Feltis, son of Roxanne Bentzel of Circle Drive, is the wing plans and programs officer assigned to the 621st Contingency Response Wing at Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst. Feltis is part of a highly specialized unit that can deploy quickly to combat hotspots or disaster areas and quickly open airfields and is often the first to provide a vital pipeline in getting food and supplies to the devastated areas.

First-place Pride win seventh-straight game
By: TODD RUTH Review Sports Editor truth.eph@lnpnews.com, Staff Writer
The Ephrata Pride midget baseball team is officially on a roll.
And Monday night at War Memorial, they added to that success with a convincing 18-3 victory over Lancaster in a game that lasted just three and a half innings due to the 15-run mercy rule.
The Pride (7-1) pounded out 12 hits and took advantage of 10 walks by Lancaster pitching to easily earn the victory– their seventh straight– and remain one point ahead of second-place Hempfield Black (6-1-1) in the School Division of the Lancaster County Midget League.
According to first-year Coach Phil Leid, it’s been a team effort thus far for the Pride. Entering Monday’s game, the team batting average was .408 with nine players hitting over .400. Pitching-wise, Ephrata has thrown five complete games and has a respectable 4.22 ERA.
"From the start of the season, these guys have consistently produced at the plate up and down the lineup, and our pitching staff has been outstanding as well," Leid said. "Defensively we’ve been pretty solid, too, but most importantly we’ve been successful at not letting a mistake steam roll into a rally."
