Richard Mentzer, veteran, mechanic, business owner

Richard C. Mentzer, 88, of Ephrata, entered into rest at Ephrata Community Hospital Thursday, May 5, 2011.

He was born in Ephrata, a son of the late Levi S. and Mamie I. (Haller) Mentzer. He was the husband of the late Josephine (Romig) Mentzer, who passed away this past March. They had been married for 65 years.

Richard served in the Navy during World War II and was an owner and mechanic for Mentzer’s Atlantic Auto Sales until his retirement in 1984.

Richard enjoyed boating on the Chesapeake Bay, even building his own boat, and traveling to Florida, Ft. Myers and Vero Beach. He also enjoyed NASCAR, fishing, and trips to the Poconos.

Surviving is a son: Lee, husband of Marlene Mentzer, of Wayne; a daughter: Linda J., wife of Larry Cheek, of Bel Air, Md.; and four grandchildren: Dawn M. Clayton, Michael L. Mentzer, Brett G. Mentzer and Kurt R. Mentzer.

Funeral services were held May 9 at Stradling Funeral Home with Chaplain Pamela Fischer officiating. Interment followed in the Middle Creek Brethren Cemetery. Military honors were accorded by the Red Rose Honor Guard.
