Former Akron official, Wayne Reber, passes Wayne A. Reber Jr.
Wayne A. Reber Jr., 78, of Akron, peacefully entered into rest at his home surrounded by his loving family Friday, May 6, 2011. He went to be with his Lord after a long and courageous battle with mesothelioma cancer. He was a devoted and loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He will be sadly missed by family and friends. He was born in West Reading, a son of the late Wayne A. Sr. and Beulah E. (Beckey) Reber. He was the husband of Fae (Renninger) Reber, to whom he shared 57 years of marriage. Wayne was a 1950 graduate of the Ephrata High School. He served in the U.S. Navy as a radioman, 1st class on the Destroyer USS Lloyd Thomas. Until his retirement, Wayne was the owner of Hopeland Manufacturing Company, a third generation apparel business started by his father in 1947. His three sons worked side-by-side with their father until closing in 2001. Wayne served seven years on the Akron planning commission, where two of those years he served as chairman. Later he served on Akron Borough Council for 29 years, 10 of which he served as council president. After retiring from borough council, he served as the tax collector for Akron until his death. Wayne was a 60-year member of Zion Lutheran Church in Akron. A member of the Masonic Lodge #665, he served as worshipful master in 1971. His other memberships include the Lancaster Lodge of Perfection, Reading Consistory, 32 degree, Rajah Temple Shrine, Lancaster County Shrine Club, Rajah Shrine Club, a life member of VFW, American Legion, Cloister Post 429 and a life member of Train Collectors Association. Wayne had a passion for golf and was a longtime member of Conestoga Country Club in Lancaster. His love of golf allowed him to travel throughout the United States, Bermuda and Europe. He enjoyed many rounds of golf with his friends and family. Surviving in addition to his wife are his children: Terry W., husband of Susan (Henly) Reber, of Akron; Tina L, wife of Kenton Enck, of Akron; Thomas A., husband of Nancy (Karklins) Reber, of Ephrata; and Troy N., husband of Connie (Stine) Reber, of Akron; grandchildren: Lisa M., wife of Ryan Stauffer, of Akron; Ryan C. Enck, of Hughesville; Tyler A. Reber, of Fairfax, Va.; Kylie N. Reber, of Ephrata; Emily L. Reber, of Akron; and Trent N. Reber, of Akron; and great-grandchildren: Brady R. and Dayton J. Stauffer. Funeral services were held May 10 at Zion Lutheran Church with the Rev. Matthew Lenahan officiating. Interment followed in the Zion Lutheran Church Cemetery. Military honors were accorded by the Red Rose Honor Guard.
