Chambersburg ousts Mounts from Districts
By: TODD RUTH Review Sports Editor truth.eph@lnpnews.com, Staff Writer
Hindsight being what it is, Ephrata probably would like to take back a few early plays in Monday night’s District Three first round playoff game vs. Chambersburg played at Northern York High School.
Defensively, a pair of first-inning throwing errors by the usually-sound Mounts put them in an early two-run hole. Then, with a potential rally by the offense in the third, Ephrata ran itself right out of the inning by trying to score its first run of the game from first on a double to right field.
Those two frames officially set the tone, then Trojan ace Mitch Warner took it from there, withstanding a two-run home run by Ephrata catcher Chris Fassnacht in the fourth to go the distance in a 5-2 victory.
Warner (7 Ks, 1 BB) kept the Mounts off-balance, despite five of Ephrata’s seven hits going for extra bases, and helped the Trojans (16-4) advance to the next round.

Witmer, relay qualify for StatesNjenga breaks long-standing EHS mark
By: TODD RUTH Review Sports Editor truth.eph@lnpnews.com, Staff Writer
It was quite a weekend at the District Three Track Championships for Ephrata’s Mary Witmer.
The Lady Mounts’ super sophomore, who missed the middle of the season with an ankle injury, is making up for lost time in the post-season.
This past weekend at Shippensburg University, Witmer claimed a pair of fourth-place medals individually, taking fourth in both the girls 300 hurdles (47.09) and 400 meter dash (58.07). In addition, along with teammates Whitney Blouch, Brianna Brubaker and Emily Blackshire, staked claim to a fifth place medal in the girls 4 X 400 relay with a time of 4:03.88.
All three times were good enough to clinch berths in next weekend’s PIAA State Meet held back at Shippensburg.
"I thought Mary ran a real nice 400 at Districts," Ephrata head coach John Keller said. "Her start was very nice and she put herself into contention right away, She was .06 of a second off her best time set last week at the league meet. We’ll shoot for a sub-58 at states, and I know that is what she is looking for. I just think it is an incredible feat that she has come the whole way back (from her injury) and is competing in three events this weekend."

Felpel rises up, claims three medalsWins gold, a silver and a bronze
By: TODD RUTH Review Sports Editor truth.eph@lnpnews.com, Staff Writer
Kyle Felpel has always shown the ability to raise his level of game in regards to the competition.
That has been a standard with the Cocalico junior since he burst on the scene a few years ago. And this past weekend, he needed to up his game a few notches more against a loaded throwing field at the District Three Track Championships held at Shippensburg University.
Mission accomplished.
Felpel, who won district titles in both discus and shot put a year ago, won a gold, a silver and a bronze to lead all Cocalico athletes at the two-day championships. Felpel recorded a school-record throw of 59-3.5 on his first attempt in the shot finals to edge Hempfield star Kyle Long (59-2) for gold. He then went on to claim second place (to Long’s throw of 190-5) with a heave of 175-0 in the discus, and capped his weekend with a surprising third-place medal (184-0) in the javelin, finishing behind only champion Jamie Colon of Donegal (189-7) and runner-up Steve Feister of Hempfield (188-8).

Cocalico felt right at home Tuesday night vs. Cumberland Valley in the waning moments of the District Three girls lacrosse semifinals at Lower Dauphin. That’s because for the fourth-straight game, the Lady Eagles and their opponent were going down to the wire.
So, clinging to a one-goal lead in the final minute, Cocalico played with extreme poise. First, the Lady Eagles got a big save at one end from first-year starting goalie Alli Stauffer. Then with possession, Cocalico went four corners in the offensive end and salted this one away, earning a spot in Thursday’s District Three finals with an exciting 13-12 victory.

Last year’s taste-testing of school menu options went so well that Cocalico School District decided to once again let students help choose next year’s menu at the Student Council Food Show.
About 125 eager students were provided with an array of new items to try as plates with small samples were set up in the high school cafeteria May 17, complete with a score sheet given to each student to rate the products.
This year’s assortment included pork barbecue, corn dogs and a new breakfast option — snack waffles. As requested by students, some Asian choices, teriyaki chicken and tangerine chicken, were available this time along with two new wraps — vegetable and Southwestern, adding some healthy alternatives.
Chris Dunn, director of food service for Cocalico, said he’s continuing his goal of offering students as much variety as he can while trying to incorporate healthy choices.
