Ephrata s Yoder selected for summer study in Germany Hannah Yoder

Ephrata High School sophomore Hannah Yoder has been awarded an all-expense-paid trip in June to the Federal Republic of Germany. The trip is sponsored by the American Association of Teachers of German (AATG). Hannah was nominated for the 3 1/2-week summer study trip by the Central Pennsylvania Chapter of AATG after undergoing an individual interview in German and a group interview in English. Their recommendation was given to the national organization, who selected 39 students for the trip. Grants from the Federal Republic of Germany have made the study trip possible for over 50 years. Over 23,000 high school students competed nationally for the trip. The summer study trip will be a great opportunity that will allow Hannah to experience Germany firsthand, further her German skills and hopefully encourage her enthusiasm for studying German. She is an outstanding student and deserves this honor, said Mrs. Jennifer Hesser, Hannah s German 3 teacher at Ephrata High School. Hannah scored in the 97th percentile nationally on a German 3 test this year and in the 94th percentile on the German 2 test last year. I m looking forward to living with a host family in Nuremberg for the first 2 1/2 weeks of the trip and then spending one week in Berlin, Hannah said. The trip will broaden my understanding of another culture and how others live. I m sure I ll take a lot of pictures.

Robeson’s late tally lifts MC girls over Cocalico

With the Section Three title still up for grabs, it might have been easy for the Manheim Central girls to get caught looking ahead to their game against front-running Donegal this Friday. Clearly, however, MC boss John Shetromph and his Lady Barons knew that would have been a mistake against up-and-coming Cocalico in a Section battle in Manheim on Tuesday night. I think Cocalico has improved well, Shetromph said. I very much believe that (Cocalico coach Dan Hogan) is getting everything he possibly can out of his team and you can tell they re a better team.

Denver warns drivers of motorcyclists

Following a deadly year for riders in 2010, half a dozen Denver motorcyclists asked borough officials Monday night to help spread the word about motorcycle safety as the peak riding season begins. We had a lot of motorcycle deaths, many of which were caused by right-of-way issues, Maeda Krizmencic told council members. People just need to learn to be aware.

Krizmencic is a spokesperson for Pennsylvania s south mountain chapter of the Alliance of Bikers Aimed Toward Education, or ABATE. The organization sponsors a publicity campaign promoting motorcycle safety and offers driver training to school and civic groups. Nineteen motorcyclists were killed across Lancaster County last year, according to published reports, making it the deadliest year for local riders since 1996. In July, Denver resident Bradley Weber died after a crash on North Reading Road. And in April, a 22-year-old Narvon man was killed after running a stop sign on Locust Street in the borough. In response to ABATE s request, Mayor Adam Webber issued a proclamation naming May Motorcycle Safety Month, urging Denver drivers to share the road and respect the unique safety needs of motorcyclists.

School program pairs seniors with students

For Brenda Wangman, teaching children has been a lifelong passion. Now in retirement, the former school teacher is able to continue fulfilling her passion through the Ephrata Area School District s Senior Tax Exchange Program (STEP). The fact that she also earns $550 a year is, in her words, icing on the cake.

Since the STEP program was launched more than four years ago, it has had a positive impact on the lives of seniors and schools, district officials said. You really feel appreciated, Wangman said of her involvement with STEP. I volunteer in a lot of things, but this is the one thing that I do that I come away the most fulfilled.

Two in critical condition

Two people remain in critical condition after the motorcycle they were on was struck by a minivan Monday night at Schoeneck and Indiantown road in West Cocalico Township, police said. The motorcyclist, Jordan Schouten, 25, of Lititz, and his passenger, Lisa Kreider, 23, of Ephrata, were taken by ambulance to Lancaster General Hospital after the 8:24 p.m. wreck, East Cocalico Township police reported. Both were in critical condition as of Wednesday morning, according to a hospital spokeswoman. Saloma Renno, 26, of Ephrata, was driving a minivan eastbound on Indiantown Road and stopped at the stop sign, police said. Schouten was driving southbound on Schoeneck Road. Renno pulled out into the path of the motorcycle, police said. Renno and her four children in the minivan were not injured. Schouten and Kreider were wearing helmets, police said. Schoeneck Fire Company, Medic 4 and 12, and Ephrata Ambulance assisted at the scene, police said. The accident remains under investigation and police ask any witnesses to call East Cocalico Township police Officer Steven Savage at 336-1725. Owner of DLW Audio in Stevens, David Wenger, passes at 62 David L. Wenger

David L. Wenger, a visionary electrical and acoustical engineer, died Monday, April 25, 2011 at Hospice of Lancaster County after a brief battle with cancer. He was 62. David s company, DLW Audio Consultants of Stevens, supplied leading recording studios, touring acts, television facilities and Olympic stadiums with critically accurate loudspeakers and custom public address system installations. His signature line and near-field studio reference loudspeakers, the Wenger/ALS 1104, are used around the world by recording engineers/producers, by audiophiles, and in mastering labs, post production facilities, flight simulators and even planetariums. Since 2006, DLW completed several noteworthy renovations for NBC television at Rockefeller Center in New York. Along with his wife and business partner, Pamela S. Wenger, David personally rewired Studio 1A, home of Dateline NBC and The Today Show, Studio 6B, home of Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, Studio 3A/3C, home of MSNBC Live" and Saturday Night Live, the studio used for off-site coverage of the 2008 Summer Olympics. This was not the first time DLW contributed to the Olympic stage. In 1992, the Wengers delivered more than 1,500 hand-made loudspeakers to BOSE Corporation for use at the Calgary and Albertville Winter Olympics, where they performed flawlessly in temperatures as cold as -20 degrees. And on July 17, 1976, at Olympic Stadium in Montreal, Canada, it was a custom public address system from David s first small shop in Blue Ball that entertained an audience that included Queen Elizabeth II of England. Disco was a big thing and we were doing club installations in 76 when we got the Olympics, recalls David s partner at the time, Tom Lalley of 20th Century Fox Studios. But Dave was fearless, not afraid of anything, and he was so savvy with acoustics and was really confident in his ability to build something that big and powerful. He was the brains behind it.
